It’s no secret that I love Wreck-It Ralph. So the not surprising announcement of a sequel was great news for me. John C. Reilly was in Australia promoting the film which has made over $200 million domestically, and had the biggest ever non-Pixar opening for Disney. The topic quickly turned to sequel possibilities.

John C. Reilly on the state of the sequel;

“They wouldn’t make [all that] merchandise, if [Disney] didn’t have plans for other [Wreck-it Ralph] stories. Some of the big muckety-muckets at the studio, who I just saw the other night, were like ‘We’re talking sequel!’” The movie made $150 million dollars in eleven days, it broke the box-office record for Disney animated movies on opening weekend. If that’s any indication that we’ll be doing a sequel… I bet we’ll be doing a sequel.”

Director Rich Moore also commented on the sequel, going so far as to talk about a high profile cameo;

“We’ll really come up with something good for Mario to do [in the next film]. To be able to present him in the sequel, would be great.”

I would hazard a statement that Mario was the most recognizable video game character not in Wreck-It Ralph. He was briefly mentioned as being “fashionably late” to Fix-It Felix Jr.’s party, but never appeared on screen. The assumption was that Nintendo wanted more than Disney was willing to pay for everyone’s favorite plumber. But with the success of the first film it now has the street credit and financial power to afford one of video games most recognizable Heroes.
