Week End Horror: Leprechaun (1993)

Welcome to Week End Horror: St. Patricks Day Edition!

It’s truly amazing how the horror genre can cover every single holiday and, to an extent succeed. This week I wanted to do something a little festive for my Week End Horror so what better movie to discuss than Leprechaun?

The 90s were a weird time for horror movies, they didn’t really produce traditionally scary movies. Instead we got an array of different “funny” and “clever” horror movies. Leprechaun was right there with the rest of them trying to incorporate humor with horror. What we got was a hilarious bad movie with tons of one liners and Jennifer Aniston playing pretty much her character from Friends.

Leprechaun is a movie that should be viewed at least once and preferably on St. Patricks Day. We get a basic story of a greedy man who steals a leprechaun’s gold and manages to capture him for years. Enter Jennifer Aniston, a big city girl trapped in small town with her little brother. Essentially the rest of the characters don’t matter and are just there to create a love interest and friendship for our leads.

The best part of this film is how incredibly goofy the leprechaun is. He roller skates, cracks jokes, and is genuinely entertaining. Really, there is no possible way to take this movie seriously and if you try you will surely be disappointed. I recommend some green beer, corned beef and cabbage to go with this movie.

All St. Patricks Day Leprechaun and Leprechaun 2 will be playing on SyFy.
