With Guillermo del Toro’s Pacific Rim looking to take off, its opening the door for other mecha adaptations, and Robotech is arguably the biggest franchise. The animated Japanese film has been in development since 2007, but it has now reportedly set up shop at Warner Bros. with commercials director Nic Mathieu in negotiations to direct. Several screenwriters have been involved with the project before, but this is the first time a director is in talks with the studio. Producers have been on the hunt for a director who could bring the 80s series into modern times for some time now.

Heat Vision reports that Robotech is finally set up at Warner Bros. with Mathieu in talks to direct. The commercials helmer is known for his work with computer-generated effects, but Robotech would be his feature film debut. Robotech takes place at a time on Earth when we’ve developed giant mecha, the robots are used to fight off three successive alien invasions. Much like Pacific Rim, the fate of the world rests in the hands of two young pilots.
