Warner Bros. releases info on Harry Potter super box set

Posted on July 31, 2012 at 9:25 pm by David "Snackbar" Edmundson

We all knew it was coming, but somehow the sheer volume of the Harry Potter Wizard’s Collection box set is still surprising.  The 31 disc, yes you read that right 31 discs, set will be released on September 7, 2012 and set you back $499.99.  To be fair Amazon and I am sure most major retailers have it for the much lower 349.96.  Amazon listed the item awhile ago, but Warner Bros. released the price and release date today.

So what does $500 get you?  Well it turns out a lot, but not everything.  Here is the breakdown of what is included.

Absolutely jam-packed, and the little doodads and knickknacks only add to the pleasure for the hardcore fans.

So let’s start with the good.  The set promises to collect all of the current bonus features that have currently been released, and add 5 hours of bonus material on top of that.  The presentation is amazing, and would look great as the prize piece in any collection.  It includes a lot of fun “doodads” that Potterphiles will love, and the stunning box measures 12-3/4” x 10-9/16” x 11-1/4” and weighs 19 lbs.

Now the not so good.  Even though it is 31 discs; 8 of the discs are DVD versions of the movies you are buying on Blu-Ray, and 2 other discs are the 3D versions of Deathly Hallows 1 &2.  So now you are looking at a 21 disc box set which is still amazing, but it seems the DVDs were added to bloat the collection and raise the amount they could charge.  It is also a little sad to see that Extended Cuts are limited to only Sorcerer’s Stone and Chamber of Secrets which have been available on Blu-Ray for a couple years now.  If this is meant to be the definitive box set then all 8 films should have received the extended treatment.  Also there is no mention to new or cut footage in the bonus features.  For this price they should have thrown in the kitchen sink.

All in all I am a little disappointed, I passed on the water downed Blu-Ray collection because I assumed there would be a super edition.  For this price I am extremely hesitant, and the absence of new footage from parts 3-8 makes me nervous that there will be another version released in a few years.  It looks amazing, but for $350 it really needs to have everything.

What do you think?  You getting it?

    • Caden

Pass. I'll wait for the super major ultra killer set.

    • Tito

I already have the extended editions and the "watered down" blu-ray so I think I am set.

    • MuggleBorn

I have 1-5 on DVD and only 6 on blu-ray. I passed on Deathly Hallows waiting for a super mega set.

    • Tom Riddle

Well I'm excited for it. A great looking set that'll look great on my bookcase.

    • Feels Like a Weasley

There's no way I can afford this. Maybe no one will buy them and they'll get clearanced.
