Warner Bros. Japan to remake Unforgiven

News from the far east. Warner Japan is planning a remake of the 1992 western Unforgiven. It will be directed by Lee Sang-il (Villain) and reportedly star Ken Watanabe (Inception, Last Samurai). Like the original, it will be set in the 1880s, but it’s location has been moved to the northern Japanese island of Hokkaido at a time when Japanese settlers were displacing the native Ainu people. Similar to Eastwood’s “retired” gunslinger, Watanabe will play a retired and very feared Samurai who is married to an Ainu. The film will find Watanabe’s character struggling to get his family out of poverty by accepting a high paying bounty.

Eastwood’s Unforgiven was a masterpiece that showed the darker side of westerns. It won the Academy Award for; Best Picture, Director (Eastwood), Editing, and Best Supporting Actor (Gene Hackman).

The Japanese version is titled Yurusarezaru mono and is scheduled for a Fall 2013 release.
