The Walking Dead: So Nice, AMC Does it Twice (Updated)

In a move that’s both shocked and delighted fans of AMC’s The Walking Dead, the cable TV powerhouse announced today that the upcoming Season 4 of The Walking Dead wasn’t the only thing fans should be looking forward to.

Though unnamed as of yet, AMC has revealed a companion series to The Walking Dead. It’ll be set in the same universe as the current TV show, but this  series will introduce new characters, new settings, and perhaps most importantly, will in no way be tied to the comic book.

“After 10 years of writing the comic book series and being so close to the debut of our fourth, and in my opinion, best season of the TV series, I couldn’t be more thrilled about getting the chance to create a new corner of The Walking Dead universe,” said series creator Robert Kirkman, who will also be working on the companion show. “The opportunity to make a show that isn’t tethered by the events of the comic book, and is truly a blank page, has set my creativity racing.”

The show not being tied to the comic is a huge boon for this new series. As a fan of the comic, the differences between the source material and the TV series became more and more polarizing as the seasons progressed. Certain characters moved further and further from what we comic fans knew and loved (here’s looking at you, Andrea), and many of us stopped watching altogether. The show was still great, but it didn’t feel like it was for us anymore. This new series brings us back to a world we love, without ever running the risk of alienating us the way the current series often does.

Robert Kirkman, Gale Anne Hurd, and David Alpert are onboard as executive producers, with AMC Studios producing, so the same level of quality we’ve all come to expect in the current series will be there for the new one. AMC also confirmed that The Talking Dead, a talk show series hosted by Chris Hardwick that features celebrities and guest commentary for The Walking Dead, will be connected to the new series as well.

The new companion series is slated to begin airing in 2015. Season 4 of The Walking Dead series begins airing October 13th.

(Update) AMC has followed up this surprise reveal with a casting announcement for that same aforementioned Season 4. Christian Serratos (Twilight, American Horror Story) will be playing the role of Rosita Espinosa. In the comic, Rosita is introduced alongside Abraham and Eugene, although whether that will be the same in the show remains to be seen. Rosita isn’t an overwhelmingly significant character in the comic, but she has remained alive for over 50 issues, and in The Walking Dead, that’s an impressive feat all by itself.
