Vin Diesel Looking to Produce Potential Sci-Fi Action Franchise, SOLDIERS OF THE SUN

According to reports from THR, Universal has picked up the original science fiction franchise, Soldiers of the Sun. The spec script was developed between Arash Amel (who’s writing the Grace Kelly biopic, Grace of Monaco) and Vin Diesel, who’s attached to star in the movie, should it eventually end up shooting.

There aren’t many details out yet, except that Soldiers of the Sun will be set in a post-apocalyptic future (what sci-fi film isn’t these days?), and it’ll focus “of soldiers that searches for a fabled city of gold while on a tour of duty in Mexico liberating it from an alien race known as Orcs.” Sounds good to me!

Apparently, Universal and Diesel are hoping that Soldiers of the Sun will blossom into another sci-fi franchise for the actor, much like Chronicles of Riddick and Fast and Furious. Since Universal is already making a boat-load of money with FF, I’m sure their fingers are tightly crossed for Soldiers of the Sun to catch on just as well. Also, Diesel is on a pretty hot streak, given the success of FF, not to mention the fact that another Riddick movie (aptly named Riddick) is coming out soon, AND he’ll be voicing Groot in Guardians of the Galaxy. Man that guy can work!

I’m not the biggest fan of Diesel, but I know that Dave and Justin will be salivating all over this movie if it does come out. I’m all for sci-fi flicks, but I’m kind of getting weary of the whole post-apocalyptic future thing. What do you guys think?
