Tyler’s Comic Corner – 9/3/14 Edition

Posted on September 3, 2014 at 6:46 am by Tyler Waterman

Welcome to Tyler’s Comic Corner, where I highlight the majority of this week’s new comic releases. My highlights include mainstream and indie titles, ensuring your pull list won’t be deprived of one of this week’s gems. My apologies if your favorite isn’t listed, but good news; you clearly already knew it was coming!

X-Men #19

Perfect Pulls: It’s the beginning of the end for one of Marvel’s most famous heroes today, as Death of Wolverine #1 begins a weekly four-part series that brings us to, well, the death of Wolverine. Previews and rumors seem to suggest what actually kills Wolverine won’t be anything we expect, so even if you’re not a fan of the character, you may want to tune in to see what does him in. Also ending this week is Original Sin, as a group of Watchers descend on the crime scene of their murdered compatriot. Will these Watchers actually do something, or are they all here to witness something even bigger? Combine these with the next chapter of the Last Will and Testament of Charles Xavier in the pages of Uncanny X-Men #25 and you’ve got a massive week of reveals from Marvel!

Tiny Titans Return To The Treehouse #4 (Of 6)
Trinity Of Sin The Phantom Stranger Futures End #1

Perfect Pulls: The future is now! While the weekly Futures End book has been going on for a few months now, this month the event kicks into high gear, with nearly every release this week being a direct glimpse of where each of these characters are in this not-so-distant future. They may only be five years in the future, but in the DC Universe five years can contain a whole lot of change, and I can’t wait to see where some of these characters end up. If you’re not into this event, you still have Batman Eternal #22 to turn to, chock full of awesome Spoiler action. And, if you’ve been hoping for a new Vertigo title, be sure to check out Names, which is being solicited as “Wolf of Wall Street meets Kill Bill.” How do you not investigate that?

gha1covImage Releases

Elephantmen #59
God Hates Astronauts #1
Hack Slash Son Of Samhain #3
Madame Frankenstein #5 (Of 7)
Nailbiter #5
Nightworld #2 (Of 4)
Sidekick #8
Southern Bastards #4
Tech Jacket #3

Perfect PullsGod Hates Astronauts is a book I feel like I’ve been hearing about for a thousand years. Whether it be big name creators, solicitations, or just word on the street, this is one of those books that I’ve been told about so often that I can’t believe it’s just now getting its Image relases. A web-comic darling turned Image release, too many comic greats have recommended this title to not merit taking a look. Also, there’s a guy with a ghost horse head… what’s not to love? If that still doesn’t do it for you, between Tech Jacket, Southern Bastards or Nailbiter, Image has something awesome for everyone.

Valiant Entertainment:
Death-Defying Dr. Mirage #1 (Of 5)

Perfect Pulls: There are a few new books from the indies this week that you may want to pay attention to, but I’d be remiss if I didn’t immediately point out to you that today sees the release of a comic where Alice Cooper has lost his abilities as the Lord of Nightmares, and can no longer bring night terrors to those who deserve them. That is a real thing that comes out today. Assuming you don’t spend all your money buying every issue of Alice Cooper #1 in your area, there are some other books worth grabbing as well. Cloaks from BOOM! Studios, about a street performer who’s also a modern day Robin Hood of Wall Street, looks promising. Valiant adds another book to it’s perfect lineup with Death Defying Dr. Mirage, and everything out of Valiant is pure gold. But biggest and best this week is without a doubt Grendel vs. The Shadow, both written and drawn by the legendary Matt Wagner, and bringing together a pairing that everyone wants to see. (And don’t call this a team-up; we spoke to Wagner on the Comic Corner Podcast, and he made it clear it’s anything but!)

Those are the highlights for Wednesday, September 3rd. Anything you simply can’t live without, or simply can’t imagine reading? Share it in the comments!
