Tyler’s Comic Corner – 9/11/2013 Edition

Posted on September 11, 2013 at 12:01 am by Tyler Waterman

Welcome to Tyler’s Comic Corner, where I highlight the majority of this week’s new comic releases. My highlights include mainstream and indie titles, ensuring your pull list won’t be deprived of one of this week’s gems. My apologies if your favorite isn’t listed, but good news; you clearly already knew it was coming!

mightyavengers1coverMarvel Releases

Astonishing X-Men #67
Avengers #19
Avengers Arena #15
Captain America #11
Deadpool #16
Fantastic Four #12
Fearless Defenders #9
Indestructible Hulk #13
Infinity The Hunt #1 (Of 4)

Marvel Universe The Avengers Earth’s Mightiest Heroes #18
Mighty Avengers #1
Ultimate Comics The Ultimates #30
Uncanny X-Force #11
Wolverine #9
X-Men #5

Perfect Pulls: The theme from Marvel this week is Infinity-inspired new titles! First, because we can never have enough Avengers books, we get the premier of Mighty Avengers. With the majority of the Avengers out in space fighting the Builders, there are few heroes left to defend the Earth from Thanos’ unexpected invasion. Realizing this, Luke Cage has come out of his short retirement to rally the heroes that are left into a new Avengers team, but can an untested team consisting of less-seasoned heroes be enough to stop Thanos? Along with Mighty Avengers comes Infinity: The Hunt. The headmasters of all the super-schools in the Marvel Universe have brought their students together for a new Contest of Champions, but the competition has attracted Thanos’ attention as well, and nothing good can come of that. Also, Avengers #19 is a significant Infinity tie-in as well! Moral of the story? There’s a whole lot of Infinity going on this new comic day.

Astro City #4
Batman #23.2 (The Riddler)
Batman And Robin #23.2 (The Court Of Owls)
Batman Arkham Unhinged #18

Earth 2 #15.2 (Solomon Grundy)
FBP Federal Bureau Of Physics #3
Flash #23.2 (Reverse-Flash)
Green Lantern #23.2 (Mongul)
Justice League #23.2 (Lobo)
Justice League Of America #7.2 (Killer Frost)
Smallville Season 11 #17
Superman #23.2 (Brainiac)
Teen Titans #23.1 (Trigon)

Perfect Pulls: The DC section of your local comic shop is nearly pure evil today, with the ongoing Villains Month oneshots dominating the new releases from DC this week. While everyone has their favorite villains, the highlights definitely include books focused on General Zod, Reverse-Flash, Brainiac and Trigon. Batman villains are also well represented this week, with the Riddler, Mr. Freeze, Harley and the Court of Owls all getting a chance to shine. Be sure as well to grab Justice League 23.2: Lobo as well; the controversy surrounding this character has been huge, and this starts the path to the New 52 redesign that has fans up in arms. If villains aren’t your thing, grab the scifi thriller FBP; the story and art is fantastic, and the quick publication schedule has made the pace even more exciting, especially after the surprise cliffhanger in the last issue.

sidekick02coverImage Releases

Clone #10
Ghosted #3
Manhattan Projects #14
Prophet #39
Sidekick #2
Walking Dead #114

Perfect Pulls: While many stories have been written about failed superheroes, or the dark side of life in tights, the premier issue of Sidekick was anything but ordinary. J. Michael Straczynski is penning a tale that leaves you feeling the desperation of the main character almost as much as he is, and the ending to the first issue was a massive shocker that clearly set this series apart from its predecessors. If you missed out on the first issue, jump on now before you’re left behind! Also, Walking Dead #114 brings us to the final issue before the multi-cover epic that is Walking Dead #115 and the start of All Out War, which promises to be the most brutal Walking Dead event so far, and when you’re talking Walking Dead, you know that’s a bold promise indeed.

Perfect Pulls: Like last week, there are a ton of promising new titles from the indie publishers this week! Top of my list is Dynamite’s Kings Watch, which brings together classic characters The Phantom, Flash Gordon and Mandrake the Magician in a five-part event that promises to be unlike anything you’d expect from that cast. Valiant adds another title to their fantastic catalog with Eternal Warrior #1, which gives Gilad Anni-Padda his own book and uncovers the past of Valiant’s undying champion. Finally, Dark Horse brings us two new titles; Resident Alien: The Suicide Blonde tells a murder mystery with a scifi twist, and Brain Boy #1 reveals the Secret Service’s telepathic super-agent, who soon discovers there may be something going on behind the scenes that even he can’t read. If you’re looking to discover new books this week, the indies definitely have something for you!

Those are the highlights for Wednesday, September 11th. Anything you simply can’t live without, or simply can’t imagine reading? Share it in the comments!
