Posted on August 28, 2013 at 7:35 am by Tyler Waterman

Welcome to Tyler’s Comic Corner, where I highlight the majority of this week’s new comic releases. My highlights include mainstream and indie titles, ensuring your pull list won’t be deprived of one of this week’s gems. My apologies if your favorite isn’t listed, but good news; you clearly already knew it was coming!

Young Avengers #9

Perfect Pulls: All good things must come to an end, and so it is with great sadness that we say goodbye to Thanos Rising this week! The epic telling of Thanos’ origin has been just as brutal and compelling as expected, and if it was greenlit to remind us all how badass Thanos is in time for Infinity, it certainly achieved its goal. Speaking of Infinity, the story rolls on in New Avengers #9, and where Avengers #18 began to flesh out the battle in space, New Avengers aims to do the same for the war back home. Can Tony Stark help hold off Thanos’ invasion of Earth while secretly holding off Incursions as well? And, as further proof that no one stays dead in comics, Scarlet Spider #21 comes with twice the Scarlet goodness, as Ben Reilly makes his long-awaited (by me at least) return!

Unwritten #52

Perfect Pulls: Speaking of endings, DC has a big one this week. Justice League #23 is the massive conclusion to Trinity War, and unlike most events, this one promises not to have a happy ending for the heroes. The secret of Pandora’s Box will be revealed, and whatever it is, we know it will mean the end of the Justice Leagues, and the onset of Villains Month and Forever EvilBatman Incorporated fans will get a chance for one last goodbye, with this week’s Batman Incorporated Special #1. A collection of stories featuring the characters Batman Inc taught us all to love, multiple creators and artists give us one last dose of Batman Inc goodness, including Bat-Cow’s first standalone adventure! Finally, if you were also a fan of Vertigo’s Collider, make special note of its name change: Collider is now FBP: Federal Bureau of Physics. Same great creative team and story, but now with a more obvious name.

sex6_cover_cmyk_trimmedImage Releases

Lazarus #3
Mind The Gap #13
Morning Glories #30
Sex #6
Skullkickers #24
Super Dinosaur #20
Think Tank #9

Perfect Pulls: Sex sells for sure, with each issue seeing reprints and sellouts, but I’m still having a hard time deciding if I like this book. Some issues seem to fall flat, where others embrace the story of a retired hero trying to find his place in a world he’s no longer sure he made any better. There is definitely greatness here, though, and if you’ve been reading along with me, I suspect we’ll all benefit from continuing. Be sure to grab the other Image greats out this week, in both Morning Glories and Lazarus, and don’t sleep on Super Dinosaur! Is it an all-ages book? Sure is. But is it also awesome? Sure is!

Perfect Pulls: I’ve been reading comics for so long that it takes quite a bit to surprise me. Rarely do I see something that I never thought possible, but this week, Dark Horse has done the impossible. Introducing Itty Bitty Hellboy #1… a Hellboy children’s comic! Yes, you did in fact read that right. Featuring the creative team from the excellent Tiny Titans and Superman Family Adventures, Hellboy goes from gritty to adorable, and those are words I never thought I’d type. Extinction Parade, the surprisingly awesome comic from Max Brooks (World War Z), also sees a new issue today, and IDW flexes its licensed muscle with new books from both their TMNT and Transformers lines. Believe me when I tell you, IDW makes your childhood heroes seem like they grew up right with you!

Those are the highlights for Wednesday, August 28th. Anything you simply can’t live without, or simply can’t imagine reading? Share it in the comments!
