Tyler’s Comic Corner – 8/20/14 Edition

Posted on August 20, 2014 at 12:01 am by Tyler Waterman

Welcome to Tyler’s Comic Corner, where I highlight the majority of this week’s new comic releases. My highlights include mainstream and indie titles, ensuring your pull list won’t be deprived of one of this week’s gems. My apologies if your favorite isn’t listed, but good news; you clearly already knew it was coming!

nova20covMarvel Releases

All-New Ghost Rider #6
All-New Ultimates #6
All-New X-Factor #12
Daredevil #7
Deadly Hands Of Kung Fu #4 (Of 4)
Deadpool Dracula’s Gauntlet #7 (Of 7)
Deadpool Vs X-Force #3 (Of 4)
Elektra #5

Mighty Avengers #13
Ms. Marvel #7
New Avengers #23
Nova #20
Original Sins #5 (Of 5)
Savage Wolverine #22
Secret Avengers #7
Storm #2
Wolverine Annual #1

Perfect Pulls: While the book has always been intense, New Avengers has recently hit a stride that may be the most brutal treatment of Marvel heroes that we’ve ever seen. The Illuminati have crossed a line that there is no coming back from, and they’ve walked away from that decision as a now broken alliance. According to the solicit, the latest issue out today follows the remaining members on their last day on Earth… so, as always, no light reading here! This week also has another issue of All-New Ghost Rider, which continues to get even better with every issue. But the most exciting part of the week comes from Nova #20, an Original Sin tie-in that reveals the secret of the Black Novas and sees the return of Sam’s dad! Simply put, Nova fans won’t want to miss this issue.

senWW1covDC Releases

Green Lantern New Guardians #34
Infinite Crisis The Fight For The Multiverse #2
Infinity Man And The Forever People #3

Red Hood And The Outlaws #34
Scribblenauts Unmasked A Crisis Of Imagination #8
Sensation Comics Featuring Wonder Woman #1
Supergirl #34
Teen Titans #2
Teen Titans Go #5
Trinity Of Sin Pandora #14

Perfect Pulls: Two very cool new books hit shelves this week from DC, and both are books that fans have been asking for for a very long time. The first is Sensation Comics featuring Wonder Woman, a seeming response to the age-old question “why isn’t there more than one Wonder Woman book?” Wonder Woman fans have clammored for years for their leading lady to get the same multi-title treatment that Batman and Superman fans both get to enjoy, and considering this book kicks off with Diana facing all of Batman’s rogues gallery in the heart of Gotham, it seems safe to say Wonder Woman fans are getting what they want. Speaking of books that fans have been demanding, this week finally sees the start of Grant Morrison’s latest DC-changing epic Multiversity… no, really! The on-again off-again, often rumored title is finally seeing the light this week, and doesn’t just tell stories set in alternate realities, but also includes detailed dossiers on the worlds that make up the Multiverse as well as additional stories that take place across the entire event. Early readers have all said it’s worth the wait, and today we all get to find out!

fo1covImage Releases

Artifacts #38
Dark Engine #2
Fade Out #1
Genius #3 (Of 5)
Manifest Destiny #9
Peter Panzerfaust #20
Protectors Inc #8
Savage Dragon #197
Saviors #5
Stray Bullets Killers #6
Supreme Blue Rose #2
Trees #4
Umbral #8
Wicked + The Divine #3

Perfect Pulls: There are so many things to love about the newest Image title that’s out today. The Fade Out is the latest from Brubaker and Phillips, and brings these two masters of noir right back to their wheelhouse. A tale that involves nightmares, suspicious deaths, film shoots, and the corrupt film makers behind them; all of this is exactly what you want from this team. If that wasn’t enough reason to grab the issue, the first issue is a massive 40 pages, and each single issue will contain exclusive story-related articles that won’t be reprinted in the trades. A huge offering from a proven team ensures that Image has a knockout before it even hits the shelves, so don’t miss it!

Valiant Entertainment:

Delinquents #1 (Of 4)

Perfect Pulls: Dynamite usually has one of the longest lists each week, so imagine my surprise when their offerings were pretty limited this week. However, 50% of those offerings are brand new, and look like they may be worth a look. A sure hit is Justice Inc #1, which brings together a sure-to-be gritty team up of The Shadow, The Avenger and Doc Savage. No one does pulp remakes better than Dynamite, so we know this is in good hands. Their other offering is one I won’t be reading myself, but might be a dream come true for many readers. Steampunk Battlestar Galactica 1880 mashes together (you guessed it) steampunk and Battlestar into a combination you’ve probably never thought of before. Meanwhile, the folks over at Dark Horse have rebooted one of their most classic titles with Dark Horse Presents #1, This anthology series has been a long staple of the Dark Horse lineup, and has served to introduce curious readers to several of Dark Horse’s most powerful brands. It will be great to see this book on shelves again!

Those are the highlights for Wednesday, August 20th. Anything you simply can’t live without, or simply can’t imagine reading? Share it in the comments!
