Tyler’s Comic Corner – 8/21/13 Edition

Posted on August 21, 2013 at 3:00 am by Tyler Waterman

Welcome to Tyler’s Comic Corner, where I highlight the majority of this week’s new comic releases. My highlights include mainstream and indie titles, ensuring your pull list won’t be deprived of one of this week’s gems. My apologies if your favorite isn’t listed, but good news; you clearly already knew it was coming!

avengers18coverMarvel Releases

Avengers #18
Avengers Assemble #18
Cable And X-Force #13
Daredevil #30
Indestructible Hulk #12
Morbius The Living Vampire #8
Nova #7
Superior Spider-Man #16
Thunderbolts #14
Ultimate Comics The Ultimates #29
Venom #39
X-Factor #261
X-Men #4
X-Men Legacy #15

Perfect Pulls: Infinity is now here, and based on the opening issue, this event is going to be explosive. And, if the lead-up was any indication, both Avengers and New Avengers are going to be extremely important to the plot of the main book. This week, we get our first chance to find out exactly how, with Avengers #18, the first direct tie-in for the Infinity event. It involves Skrulls and Avengers, who totally get along just fine, so I’m sure having to work together will go over just great! Over in Superior Spider-Man, find out if Otto Spidey finally rids us of the most annoying Hobgoblin ever, and fans of symbiotes might want to grab Venom #39 to meet the newest alien-suited heroine. Also, if you’re still sleeping on the book I keep recommending, go read Cable and X-Force! It’s genuinely awesome, I swear!

JLD23coverDC Releases

100 Bullets Brother Lono #3 (Of 8)
Animal Man #23
Arrow #10
Batman ’66 #2
Batman And Nightwing #23
Batman Beyond Universe #1
Batwoman #23
Birds Of Prey #23
Fables #132
Green Lantern New Guardians #23
He-Man And The Masters Of The Universe #5
Justice League Dark #23
Justice League Of America’s Vibe #7
Legion Of Super-Heroes #23
Red Hood And The Outlaws #23
Supergirl #23
Superman Unchained #3
Trinity Of Sin Pandora #3
Wonder Woman #23

Perfect Pulls: Maybe it’s just me, but I still haven’t gotten over Damian Wayne dying. I miss him so much! And this week, we get another somber reminder of his death with Batman and Nightwing #23, which I imagine will be the saddest yet. Remember, Nightwing was by Damian’s side when he died, and is likely to blame himself just as hard as Bruce is… this book is aiming right for my feels. Over in Justice League Dark #23Trinity War rages on. Wonder Woman has Pandora’s Box now… or does it have her? I’m pretty sure the box is winning, and a rampaging Wonder Woman is not something anyone can stop, especially with Superman barely able to stand.  And speaking of the Man of Steel, we get another Superman Unchained this week, where Jim Lee and Scott Snyder continue to remind us just how epic Superman really is!

Aphrodite IX #4
Bounce #4
Chin Music #2
I Love Trouble #6
Mice Templar IV Legend #6
Revival #13
Thief Of Thieves #16

Perfect Pulls: Hooray, it’s Bounce week! In what is a relatively slow week for Image, the highlight is undoubtedly Bounce, the everyman hero that is my personal favorite book coming out of the indie powerhouse. While several of Image’s favorite books see new releases this week as well, including the criminally good Thief of Thieves, I simply can’t recommend getting on board with Bounce enough. Definitely start from the beginning, though; like most (ok, all) Image books, you might be a bit lost if you start in the middle.

Valiant Entertainment:
Bloodshot #0
X-O Manowar #16

Perfect Pulls: The biggest books coming from the smaller publishers this week definitely come from Valiant. X-O Manowar gets us started, with an epic showdown between the Manowar and the Eternal Warrior, which is guaranteed to be excellent. But the real show is Bloodshot #0, where we finally get the origin story of Valiant’s most badass character of all (which is saying something). We also get a double-dip of Dark Horse’s excellent Star Wars comics and IDW’s fantastic TMNT books get another villain-focused mini.

Those are the highlights for Wednesday, August 20th. Anything you simply can’t live without, or simply can’t imagine reading? Share it in the comments!
