Tyler’s Comic Corner – 8/13/14 Edition

Posted on August 13, 2014 at 5:58 am by Tyler Waterman

Welcome to Tyler’s Comic Corner, where I highlight the majority of this week’s new comic releases. My highlights include mainstream and indie titles, ensuring your pull list won’t be deprived of one of this week’s gems. My apologies if your favorite isn’t listed, but good news; you clearly already knew it was coming!

X-Force #8
X-Men #18

Perfect Pulls: We’ve reached the penultimate chapter of Original Sin, and Robo-Fury doesn’t look like he’s going to take this chapter sitting down. Will all these secrets tear apart the Marvel Universe? We know the villains are on the cusp of having their day in Axis, the next event from Marvel, so I can’t help but feel like this event isn’t going to end well… but it certainly reads well! This week also brings us Spider-Men of the current and 2099 variety, Captains of the America and Marvel variety, and X’s of the Amazing, All-New, Force and just plain ol’ Men variety, although that last one is actually ladies. And finally, we’ve reached the start of the end of the road (got that?) in Wolverine #11, the final issue before the start of Death of Wolverine. I can’t wait to find out what that’s about! Oh wait.

bm34covDC Releases

Scooby-Doo Where Are You #48
Smallville Season 11 Chaos #1 (Of 4)
Superboy #34
Superman Wonder Woman #11
World’s Finest #2

Perfect Pulls: It’s been a long time since I could say this, but today sees an issue of Batman that isn’t set in the past! Zero Year is over, and Batman has returned to the here-and-now, though the current state of Gotham isn’t a pretty one. All the damage we’ve seen piling up in the pages of Batman Eternal now comes to the pages of the main title, which focuses on Batman hunting down someone from his past, and also gives us a glimpse of the upcoming story arc Endgame. Over in Green Lantern Corps, we get to see John Stewart deal with the terrible fallout of the last issue, and find out just how far he’s willing to go to find Fatality. Considering how far we’ve seen him go in the past, chances are good this book is going to make some waves. Finally, fans Superboy and Birds of Prey will want to grab today’s issues, as they’re the last in each series.

Thief Of Thieves #23
Walking Dead #130
Where Is Jake Ellis #4 (Of 5)
Zero #10

Perfect Pulls: After a brief hiatus, Millar and Parlov’s outstanding Flash Gordon-homage Starlight returns! So far this book has encapsulated everything that makes older heroes great, and has featured some of Millar’s best (and most grounded) writing, which is perfectly complimented by Parlov’s outstanding art. If you’ve skipped this one so far, do yourself a favor and stop that immediately. Throw in new issues of Zero, Walking Dead and runaway hit Sex Criminals and you’ve got yourself a big week from Image.

Perfect Pulls: I read a lot of solicits every week, so I’m used to seeing similar taglines to describe upcoming titles. However, every so often I see something I definitely haven’t seen before, and those are the books you know you need to check out. This week that book was Dark Ages from Dark Horse. The premise already sounded cool; a book with a medieval setting pitting knights against demons that are probably actually aliens. I was already intrigued, but when the solicit described it as “Starship Troopers meets Kingdom of Heaven” I knew I had to read it. On top of that, we’ve got a new Transformers title from IDW (as well as a new issue of their perfect TMNT title), the latest issue of Red Sonja from Dynamite, and a trio of great books from Valiant.

Those are the highlights for Wednesday, August 13th. Anything you simply can’t live without, or simply can’t imagine reading? Share it in the comments!
