Tyler’s Comic Corner – 7/24 Edition

Posted on July 24, 2013 at 6:38 am by Tyler Waterman

Welcome to Tyler’s Comic Corner, where I highlight the majority of this week’s new comic releases. My highlights include mainstream and indie titles, ensuring your pull list won’t be deprived of one of this week’s gems. My apologies if your favorite isn’t listed, but good news; you clearly already knew it was coming!

Superior_Spider-Man_Team-Up_Vol_1_1_Ramos_VariantMarvel Releases

Captain America #9
Gambit #15
Hawkeye Annual #1
Hunger #1 (Of 4)
Journey Into Mystery #654
New Avengers #8
Scarlet Spider #19
Superior Spider-Man #14
Superior Spider-Man Team-Up #1
Ultimate Comics X-Men #29
Uncanny Avengers #10
What If AvX #3 (Of 4)
Wolverine #7
Wolverine And The X-Men #33
Young Avengers #8

Perfect Pulls: What may look like a short week from Marvel is anything but, particularly for Spider-fans. Superior Spider-Man #14 is essentially the beginning of a new era; although Doc Ock has been Spider-Man for thirteen issues, this marks the beginning of Ock truly becoming the Spider-Man he set out to be. New costume, new base of operations, and new problems for sure. Along with that issue is Superior Spider-Man Team-Up, a new book continuing the Avenging Spider-Man team-up magic with a superior twist. Also this week, Captain America #9 picks up after the jaw-dropping ending to the last issue, Hunger begins Galactus’ attack on the Ultimate Universe, Hawkeye gets its first annual, and New Avengers brings us one step closer to Infinity. Like I said; this is a huge week from Marvel!

jld22_cvr1DC Releases

All-Star Western #22
Aquaman #22
Arrow #9
Batman Superman #2
Batman The Dark Knight #22
Catwoman #22
Constantine #5
Flash #22
Green Team Teen Trillionaires #3
Justice League Dark #22
Larfleeze #2
Red Hood And The Outlaws #22
Superman #22
Superman Unchained #1 (Director’s Cut Edition)
Talon #10
Teen Titans #22
Unwritten #51

Perfect Pulls: Lots of great books this week from DC, but none more exciting than Batman Superman #2. The World’s Finest find themselves in Earth 2, facing off against none other than their Earth 2 counterparts, and so far it hasn’t been a particularly cordial meeting. Trinity War continues at break-neck speed in Justice League Dark #22, again pitting heroes against heroes as some of the least-trusted do-gooders are called in to help stop the disaster that’s brewing fast. Also, cool things are happening over in All-Star Western, as Jonah Hex has found himself in modern times, and even better, in Arkham Asylum!

bounce3variant_cover_72_500Image Releases
Bounce #3
Clone #9
Dream Merchant #3 (Of 6)
Lazarus #2
Mice Templar IV Legend #5
Witchblade #168

Perfect Pulls: Image has a whole bunch of great new books out right now, and nearly every week there’s another, but there isn’t a single book they’re putting out right now that I like more than Bounce. This book is easy to judge based on some of the pages that have gotten the most attention, but contrary to popular belief, this isn’t just a stoner-comedy in tights. In fact, there is a dark and serious book to be had here, and if you judge this one without reading it, I can confidently tell you you’re missing out. Also, fans of the dark and gritty should be reading Greg Rucka’s Lazarus; the second issue is out today, along with a reprinting of the first if you missed it!

Valiant Entertainment:
Bloodshot #13

Perfect Pulls: The name of the game this week over at the indies is definitely team-ups. Over at IDW, there’s a crossover that I can’t help but think has one of the most appropriate titles ever. The jet-packed Rocketeer meets the dapper fedora of The Spirit in Pulp Friction, a title that puts a smile on my face every time I read it. Meanwhile, Dynamite has a team-up horror fans will love to scream for, as Ash Williams meets Cassie Hack in Army of Darkness vs. Hack/Slash. Also, don’t miss two new books from Dark Horse that look particularly excellent. Gamma essentially looks to be a rated-M version of Pokemon, following the greatest monster trainer ever whose cowardice actually doomed us all. Then, on a more serious note, check out Mass Effect: Foundation, another in the list of excellent Mass Effect comics from Dark Horse, this one written by Mac Walters himself, writer of both the second and third games.

Those are the highlights for Wednesday, July 24th. Anything you simply can’t live without, or simply can’t imagine reading? Share it in the comments!
