Tyler’s Comic Corner – 7/23/14 Edition

Posted on July 23, 2014 at 12:01 am by Tyler Waterman

Welcome to Tyler’s Comic Corner, where I highlight the majority of this week’s new comic releases. My highlights include mainstream and indie titles, ensuring your pull list won’t be deprived of one of this week’s gems. My apologies if your favorite isn’t listed, but good news; you clearly already knew it was coming!

storm1covMarvel Releases

100th Anniversary Special Avengers #1
All-New Doop #4 (Of 5)
All-New Invaders #8
All-New Ultimates #5
Amazing Spider-Man #4
Daredevil #6
Deadpool #32
Deadpool Vs X-Force #2 (Of 4)
Marvel Universe Ultimate Spider-Man #28
Mighty Avengers #12
Original Sin #5.2
Original Sins #4 (Of 5)
Storm #1
Wolverine And The X-Men #6

Perfect Pulls: Marvel undoubtedly has a truckload of big announcements lined up for the big SDCC weekend, but there won’t be a truckload of new Marvel comics waiting for you at your shop today. That being said, there’s still plenty to look forward to. The biggest title this week has to be the start of Storm, the first solo Storm title in a very long time, if ever. Although not a character I’ve ever particularly loved, her fan-base is rabid and this should be the book that puts a smile on all of their faces. There is also a double-dip of Original Sin tie-ins, to go along with a double-dip of Deadpool titles as well. Throw in my most favorite unpopular Marvel title All-New Invaders and maybe this week isn’t so light after all!

bm33covDC Releases

All-Star Western #33
Aquaman #33
Batman #33
Batman ’66 #13
Batman And Robin #33
Batman Beyond Universe #12
Batman Eternal #16
Catwoman #33
Dead Boy Detectives #7
Flash #33
He-Man And The Masters Of The Universe #15
Injustice Gods Among Us Year Two #8
Justice League Dark #33
New 52 Futures End #12
Red Lanterns #33
Secret Origins #4
Star-Spangled War Stories Featuring G.I. Zombie #1
Superman #33
Trinity Of Sin Pandora #13
Unwritten Volume 2 Apocalypse #7
Wonder Woman #33

Perfect Pulls: This new comic book day is particularly special for DC, and for fans of Batman nationwide, as today is officially Batman Day! DC came up with the idea to celebrate Batman’s 75th anniversary, and not only did they have a great idea, they also know exactly how to celebrate it. Participating comic shops will be giving out masks and a special free edition of Detective Comics #27, but even if your shop is too small to participate, you won’t be missing out. On the shelves will be a plethora of great new Batman books as well, with nearly every variation represented. Go back in time with Batman ’66 while jumping to the future with Batman Beyond Universe. As always, get your weekly dose of vengeance with Batman Eternal. But most importantly, watch Robin Rises really kick off in Batman and Robin #33, while finishing all of this off with the ultimate celebration: the final chapter of Zero Year in Batman #33. Congratulations, DC; you throw a mean Batman Day.

sbr1covImage Releases

Revival #22
Saga #21
Savage Dragon #196
Skullkickers #29
Superannuated Man #2 (Of 6)
Supreme Blue Rose #1
Trees #3
Undertow #6 (Of 6)
Velvet #6
Zero #9

Perfect Pulls: Just like Marvel this week, Image is light on quantity but not on quality. Classic favorites are represented in Skullkickers and Savage Dragon, while some of Image’s biggest new books have new offerings as well, with Saga, Revival, Velvet and Zero all seeing new issues today. We also have the latest issue of Trees, a book that doubles my interest in the series with every issue. But most exciting is Supreme Blue Rose, a title that had been rumored for ages and all but given up on by fans. Revisiting one of the most beloved Image characters, this new take on the series from Warren Ellis looks to be outstanding. I suspect a lot of people will be talking about this book, so don’t miss out!

Valiant Entertainment:

Perfect Pulls: While some other publishers may have gone light before SDCC, the indies didn’t follow suit, with lots of new offerings today. BOOM! harkens back to the days of the Avengers (no, not those Avengers) with Steed and Mrs. Peel We’re Needed #1. Dark Horse comes in swinging with the return of two classic characters, close in name but not much else. On one hand we have the return of Groo, fighting Conan of all things, while the Goon returns as well in Goon: Occasion of Revenge. IDW recreates the fight all of us had in our bedrooms growing up with Transformers vs G.I. Joe #1, and Valiant drops a Bloodshot specific Armor Hunters spinoff. But the most exciting of all of these is the return of Walter Simonson to Asgard, but maybe not how you think. Simonson brings both his writing and artistic talents to Ragnarok #1, a new series from IDW that promises over-the-top godly action as only Simonson can bring it.

Those are the highlights for Wednesday, July 23rd. Anything you simply can’t live without, or simply can’t imagine reading? Share it in the comments!
