Tyler’s Comic Corner – 7/17 Edition

Posted on July 17, 2013 at 2:00 am by Tyler Waterman

Welcome to Tyler’s Comic Corner, where I highlight the majority of this week’s new comic releases. My highlights include mainstream and indie titles, ensuring your pull list won’t be deprived of one of this week’s gems. My apologies if your favorite isn’t listed, but good news; you clearly already knew it was coming!

X-Factor #259

Perfect Pulls: Another week, another reminder that Marvel NOW has put out some seriously fantastic books. Whether it’s All-New X-Men #14 with its epic showdown between Jean and Mastermind, Nova #6 picking up after the shocking reveal at the end of last issue, or Thor God of Thunder #10 bringing us three times the Thor goodness, Marvel NOW has shown us that sometimes reboots really are a good thing. Marvel also comes out swinging with its miniseries muscle this week as well. The fantastic Thanos Rising has its penultimate issue, “Superior Spider-Month” brings us the horrifying Superior Carnage, and What If? AvX continues to show us just how much worse AvX could have gone. (Trust me, based on the first issue, it could have been a lot bloodier!)

jl6coverDC Releases

100 Bullets Brother Lono #2 (Of 8)
Animal Man #22
Batman ’66 #1
Batman And Catwoman #22
Batman Beyond Unlimited #18
Batwoman #22
Birds Of Prey #22
Fables #131
Green Lantern New Guardians #22
He-Man And The Masters Of The Universe #4
Justice League Of America #6
Justice League Of America’s Vibe #6
Legion Of Super-Heroes #22
Supergirl #22
Wonder Woman #22

Perfect Pulls: The highlight of this week from DC is definitely Justice League of America #6, the second part of the Justice League-focused Trinity War event. Part one, which took place in last week’s Justice League #22, was surprisingly intense, especially for an opening chapter of an event. Did Superman really kill Doctor Light in cold blood? Everyone thinks so, but something else is going on, and hopefully JLA #6 will shed some light on this scheme. Also, if you missed the digital form last week, the startlingly-faithful Batman ’66 comes to us in print form this week, and get ready for the next Lantern event with Green Lantern New Guardians #22, which introduces Relic, the next terrible villain the Corps must face in the upcoming Lights Out.

elephantmen50coverImage Releases

Aphrodite IX #3
Artifacts #29
Elephantmen #50
Invincible #104
Non-Humans #4 (Of 4)
Prophet #37
Revival #12

Perfect Pulls: This week from Image sees an anniversary issue in Elephantmen #50, marking a major milestone for one of Image’s most beloved titles. It also marks the end of one of their most acclaimed miniseries as well, as Non-Humans comes to a close. The dark tale of living toys and their not-very-ToyStory lives comes to a conclusion with a death that promises to be a fitting end to the book, though the creators have promised that there will be more Non-Human goodness to come.

Perfect Pulls: If you’re a fan of vampires, this is a really good week for you when it comes to the indie publishers. From BOOM! comes Day Men, following the saga not of vampires themselves, but of the mortal employees who protect their interests and needs when the sun is up. Dark Horse brings two new vampire-related titles this week, with Blood Brothers and Strain: The Fall. Blood Brothers follows the tale of two vampires who’ve been best friends for centuries, but who are now falling apart at the worst time, as a villain hellbent on destroying the world can only be stopped with their combined efforts. Strain: The Fall continues on the mythos established by Guillermo del Toro in his Strain comic, where New York is now overrun, and the only one who can save anyone is crushed by his failure to stop this horror in the first place. And, if you’re looking for something without vampires, be sure to grab Red Sonja #1, featuring the beginning of the highly-anticipated Gail Simone run on the title.

Those are the highlights for Wednesday, July 17th. Anything you simply can’t live without, or simply can’t imagine reading? Share it in the comments!
