Tyler’s Comic Corner – 6/4/14 Edition

Posted on June 4, 2014 at 6:30 am by Tyler Waterman

Welcome to Tyler’s Comic Corner, where I highlight the majority of this week’s new comic releases. My highlights include mainstream and indie titles, ensuring your pull list won’t be deprived of one of this week’s gems. My apologies if your favorite isn’t listed, but good news; you clearly already knew it was coming!

Moon Knight #4
New Warriors #5
Original Sin #3 (Of 8)
Painkiller Jane The 22 Brides #1 (Of 3)
Punisher #6
Superior Foes Of Spider-Man #12

Perfect Pulls: Today is another day where Marvel reminds us that no one does teenage superheroes better than they do. Whether it’s the interstellar father-and-son adventures in Cyclops #2, the teenaged webslinging of Miles Morales The Ultimate Spider-Man #2, or even the angsty snarky plotting of Loki Agent of Asgard #5, Marvel has you covered if you’re looking for young heroes doing their best to be, well, super. The darker side of Marvel is also well represented today. You can get your vengeful murdering on in either Punisher #6 or Magneto #5, explore the dark corners of New York with Moon Knight #4, or watch Danny Rand avenge a beheaded dragon in Iron Fist The Living Weapon #3. And don’t forget that the current summer blockbuster Original Sin also continues today as well. All in all, there is a lot to look forward to from Marvel today!

New 52 Futures End #5
Swamp Thing #32
Tiny Titans Return To The Treehouse #1 (Of 6)
Trinity Of Sin The Phantom Stranger #20
Vampire Diaries #6
Wake #9 (Of 10)

Perfect Pulls: DC’s list is a bit smaller than normal this week, but it’s jam-packed with crossovers and events. Action Comics #32 is the next chapter of the Doomed event, which has been a very cool new take on the threat of Doomsday. If Super-events aren’t your thing, the current Lantern event also rolls on, with the third chapter of the outstanding Uprising in the pages of Green Lantern #32. While it doesn’t have a cool title, Aquaman and Swamp Thing have been crossing over into each other’s books as well, and that continues in today’s Swamp Thing #32. And of course, DC’s summer event Futures End also continues today. Combine all of those with a new Batman Eternal  and the penultimate chapter of The Wake and suddenly this week doesn’t seem so light after all!

Nailbiter #2
One-Hit Wonder #3 (Of 5)
Rise Of The Magi #1
Spawn #244
Superannuated Man #1 (Of 6)
Witchblade #175

Perfect Pulls: Image has a new book today that sounds perfect for anyone who has ever pretended to cast a spell. (Don’t act like you haven’t.) Rise of the Magi, the newest Image title from Mark Silvestri, tells the tale of two worlds kept alive by a black sphere that contains all the past, present and future magic of these worlds. However, when a delightfully named commoner Asa Stonethrow discovers that a shard of the sphere has been stolen, the race is on to discover how it happened, and what it means for the fate of both worlds. If you prefer your magic to be more about demons, you’re also in luck, as the uber-talented Ales Kot teams up with Maro Oleksicki to tell the tale of a past Estacado in the new Darkness Close Your Eyes one shot. Finally, if magic just isn’t your thing, how about the tale of an old man in a world taken over by mutant animals, living off the remains of humanity and trying to survive? That’s Superannuated Man #1, and also sounds magical, in its own way.

Perfect Pulls: There isn’t a ton of new stuff this week from the indies, but one new book in particular jumps off this page with an astounding “no way, they made a comic for that?!” That’s right, it wasn’t an April Fools joke… today brings us BOOM! Studios’ Big Trouble in Little China #1! Return to one of John Carpenter’s most loved worlds, as he teams up with Eric Powell (The Goon) and Brian Churilla (The Sixth Gun) to tell all new stories about Jack Burton. That’s right, this isn’t just a movie adaptation; these are actually brand-new stories with Carpenter at the helm, and needless to say I’m pumped about it. Fans of scantily-clad vampires also have a reason to rejoice today, with the start of New Vampirella from Dynamite, kicking off a major story arc and a brand new monthly for the classic anti-hero.

Those are the highlights for Wednesday, June 4th. Anything you simply can’t live without, or simply can’t imagine reading? Share it in the comments!
