Tyler’s Comic Corner – 6/22/16 Edition

Posted on June 22, 2016 at 6:39 am by Tyler Waterman

Welcome to Tyler’s Comic Corner, where I highlight the majority of this week’s new comic releases. My highlights include mainstream and indie titles, ensuring your pull list won’t be deprived of one of this week’s gems. My apologies if your favorite isn’t listed, but good news; you clearly already knew it was coming!

Carnage #9
Civil War II Choosing Sides #1 (Of 6)
Deadpool V Gambit #1 (Of 5)
Doctor Strange #9
Drax #8
Gwenpool #3
Marvel Universe Ultimate Spider-Man Contest Of Champions #4
Mighty Thor #8
Moon Girl And Devil Dinosaur #8
Ms. Marvel #8
Nighthawk #2
Power Man And Iron Fist #5
Rocket Raccoon And Groot #6
Scarlet Witch #7
Star Wars The Force Awakens Adaptation #1 (Of 5)
Totally Awesome Hulk #7
Ultimates #8
Uncanny Avengers #10
Web Warriors #8

Perfect Pulls: I’m torn on whether to recommend or avoid Civil War II: Choosing Sides #1. Major Marvel events always have a short-story compilation book. The problem is, sometimes they’re great, and sometimes they’re terrible, and you won’t know which until you’ve paid the price of admission. I know myself well enough to know I’ll probably pull the trigger on this one, but if it fails to impress I’m sure to sit the rest out. Also, watched The Force Awakens a million times and read the novel until your eyes bled? Desperate for another way to consume the story? Good news; the comic adaptation kicks off today! Finally, don’t miss Deadpool v Gambit #1 if you’re a huge fan of the worst things to come out of the 90’s!

det935covDC Releases

Action Comics #958
Adventures Of Supergirl #4
Aquaman #1
Cyborg #12
Deathstroke #19
Detective Comics #935
Flash #1
Harley Quinn #29
Justice League #52
Looney Tunes #231
Red Thorn #8
Robin Son Of Batman #13
Suicide Squad Most Wanted Deadshot And Katana #6 (Of 6)
Teen Titans #21
Wonder Woman #1

Perfect Pulls: This is the first week of Rebirth that reminded me that several of the flagship titles are bimonthly. As I predicted when it was announced, my wallet is crying, but the comic fan in me is thrilled! These books have been so good that I’m going to fall hook, line and sinker for this dastardly move. Let’s face it; Rebirth is cool as hell. Sure, it’s still early, and not everything is perfect. But it’s incredibly easy to be a DC comics fan right now, whether you’re old-school or a new entrant. I can’t wait to get more of both Detective and Action Comics today, plus we get the debuts of both Flash and Wonder Woman, both of which I suspect are going to be major drivers of the overall Rebirth plot. Yet again, it’s another great NCBD for DC readers.

Aloha Hawaiian Dick #3 (Of 5)
Autumnlands #11
Bitch Planet #8
Black Road #3
Cry Havoc #6
Drifter #12
Pretty Deadly #10
Rumble #11
She Wolf #1
Snowfall #5
Thief Of Thieves #32

Perfect Pulls: Image has a new addition for the first time in a few weeks, and I bet this one ends up with a really weird twist. The solicit for She Wolf #1 uses some specific wording that makes me think this book won’t quite be what it seems. Billed as a tale of a teenage girl who (and I quote) “believes she was bitten by a werewolf

Perfect Pulls: BOOM! Studios has an interesting collaboration out today that fans of the hit show Sons of Anarchy. Kurt Sutter, creator of SoA, kicks off his first-ever comic, and I’m guessing from the cover it’s going to appeal to the same fanbase! Lucas Stand looks to be everything you’d want from a comic about a whisky-drinking, butt-kicking antihero. Once again mixing a gritty protagonist with a supernatural setting, and mixing in some time-travel to boot, I suspect this one is going to be worth looking into. Also, vintage action-figure fans won’t want to miss the blast of nostalgia that is IDW’s Action Man #1.

Those are the highlights for Wednesday, June 22nd. Anything you simply can’t live without, or simply can’t imagine reading? Share it in the comments!
