Tyler’s Comic Corner – 6/12 Edition

Posted on June 12, 2013 at 12:01 am by Tyler Waterman

Welcome to Tyler’s Comic Corner, where I highlight the majority of this week’s new comic releases. My highlights include mainstream and indie titles, ensuring your pull list won’t be deprived of one of this week’s gems. My apologies if your favorite isn’t listed, but good news; you clearly already knew it was coming!

gotg3covMarvel Releases

Alpha Big Time #5 (Of 5)
Astonishing X-Men #63
Avengers Assemble #16
Avenging Spider-Man #22
Deadpool #11
Guardians Of The Galaxy #3
Savage Wolverine #6
Thor God Of Thunder #9
Ultimate Comics X-Men #27
Uncanny X-Force #6
Venom #36
Wolverine #4
Wolverine And The X-Men #31

Perfect Pulls: A quieter week this week from Marvel then we got last week, but not without some serious can’t-miss books. Guardians of the Galaxy remains the only high-quality Marvel NOW title that doesn’t seem to come out four times a month, so we finally get another issue of the fantastic Marvel space epic. The Godbomb saga continues in Thor God of Thunder #9, a story so excellent it takes three Thors to tell it. Finally, the Hellfire Saga kicks off in a big way over in Wolverine and the X-Men #31. This has always been my least favorite of the major X-titles, mostly because it never seems to have a consistent direction, so I’m very excited to see if this event brings this book up to the level of All-New or Uncanny.

batman-zero-year-coverDC Releases

American Vampire The Long Road To Hell #1 (One Shot)
Batgirl #21
Batman #21
Batman Arkham Unhinged #15
Batman Li’l Gotham #3
Constantine #4

Katana #5
Masters Of The Universe The Origin Of Hordak #1 (One Shot)
Nightwing #21
Suicide Squad #21
Superboy #21
Superman Unchained #1
Threshold #6
Worlds’ Finest #13

Perfect Pulls: DC comes out swinging this week with not one, not two, but three massive Scott Snyder-written books that mark some of the most anticipated titles and stories of the summer. First, Snyder and Greg Capullo’s Zero Year kicks off in Batman #21, finally telling the New 52 origin of Batman. Second, the powerhouse team of Snyder and Jim Lee bring us Superman Unchained, a brand new Superman monthly book that aims to convey the real power of the Last Son of Krypton. Finally, after a few month hiatus, Snyder’s extremely popular American Vampire series returns with a new oneshot featuring fan-favorite vampire hunter Travis Kidd. If you’re a fan of Scott Snyder (and how could you not be?), this is a great week from DC!

pp11covImage Releases

Aphrodite IX #2
Artifacts #28
Distant Soil #40
Dream Merchant #2 (Of 6)
Great Pacific #7
Manhattan Projects #12
Peter Panzerfaust #11
Walking Dead #111

Perfect Pulls: Today sees a new issue of one of Image’s most compelling books, and considering Image’s lineup, that’s a serious statement. Peter Panzerfaust, a reimagining of the Peter Pan legend told in a WWII setting, is equally endearing and heartbreaking all at once. If you haven’t been reading it, be sure to grab this issue before it sells out, and look for the trades collecting the other ten issues as well. You won’t be disappointed. This week we also get another chapter of The Walking Dead, a book that was starting to get a little hard to take in the “suspension of disbelief” category. However, after last issue the book seems to be heading back towards the gritty and away from ridiculous, which makes it much easier to recommend this week.

Valiant Entertainment:

Perfect Pulls: There are all sorts of awesome new offerings from the indie world this week! I’d be remiss if I didn’t start with Six-Gun Gorilla from BOOM!, a pulp-western hybrid featuring a giant gorilla with some giant guns, set in a scifi/western mashup setting that is sure to peak your curiosity. On the darker side, Breath of Bones from Dark Horse tells the story of a clay monster from Jewish legend tearing apart Nazis to protect a small Jewish settlement, and who doesn’t love seeing Nazis get what’s coming to them? Finally, IDW has a new offering from Joe Hill called Thumbprint, a story about a discharged soldier coming home, and their actions coming home with them, in a tale that promises to “turn your guts inside out.” Sounds great… I think?

Those are the highlights for Wednesday, June 12th. Anything you simply can’t live without, or simply can’t imagine reading? Share it in the comments!
