Tyler’s Comic Corner – 5/7/14 Edition

Posted on May 7, 2014 at 5:00 am by Tyler Waterman

Welcome to Tyler’s Comic Corner, where I highlight the majority of this week’s new comic releases. My highlights include mainstream and indie titles, ensuring your pull list won’t be deprived of one of this week’s gems. My apologies if your favorite isn’t listed, but good news; you clearly already knew it was coming!

cyke1covMarvel Releases

All-New X-Factor #7
Amazing Spider-Man #1.1
Black Widow #6
Cyclops #1
Deadpool Vs Carnage #3 (Of 4)
Iron Fist The Living Weapon #2
Loki Agent Of Asgard #4
Magneto #3
Miles Morales The Ultimate Spider-Man #1
Miracleman #5
Moon Knight #3
New Warriors #4
Original Sin #1 (Of 8)
Punisher #5
Savage Wolverine #18
She-Hulk #4

Perfect Pulls: There are few things that put a bigger smile on my face than being able to start this Comic Corner with the statement “a new Cyclops monthly starts today!” Young Cyclops of All-New X-Men fame takes to space alongside his father Corsair, it what promises to be the father-and-son space adventure every kid dreams about. And if one awesome young hero getting a #1 today wasn’t enough, over on the Ultimate side of the MU we have the restarting Miles Morales The Ultimate Spider-Man. If you’ve never spent some time with Miles, please don’t miss this chance to come on board. The creation and building of Miles may be Bendis’ finest legacy at Marvel, and I’m fully aware of how loaded that statement really is. And while these solo books are great, be sure to also not miss the real start of Original Sin, with the latest Marvel summer event kicking into gear today as well.

fe1covDC Releases

Aquaman And The Others #2
Astro City #12
Batman Eternal #5
Batman Superman #10
Batwing #31
Detective Comics #31
Earth 2 #23
Fairest #26
Green Arrow #31
Green Lantern #31
Hinterkind #7
Justice League 3000 #6
Movement #12
New 52 Futures End #1
Scooby-Doo Team-Up #4
Swamp Thing #31
Teen Titans Annual #3
Trinity Of Sin The Phantom Stranger #19
Vampire Diaries #5
Wake #8 (Of 10)

Perfect Pulls: Speaking of events getting started, DC’s doing the exact same thing today, with the premier issue of Futures End. Now, I could point out how utterly ridiculous it is that the latest DC event is starting before the current event Forever Evil has even ended, but I’m going to take the high road here, because honestly Futures End looks pretty darn awesome. The preview #0 issue given out this past Free Comic Book Day was promising, and anything that combines Batman Beyond and Grifter is something straight out of my dream journal. DC may not have handled Forever Evil well at all, but I’m very interested in giving this latest effort all of my attention. We also have the latest issue of Batman Eternal, as well as the second issue in the already-outstanding Manapul run in Detective Comics. And The Movement comes to a close today, after existing exactly twelve issues longer than I ever would have expected.

68 Rule Of War #2 (Of 4)
Alex + Ada #6
Aphrodite IX #10
Apocalypse Al #4 (Of 4)
Burn The Orphanage Reign Of Terror #1 (Of 5)
Clone #16
Cyber Force #9
Fatale #22
Madame Frankenstein #1 (Of 7)
Nailbiter #1
Rat Queens #6
Real Heroes #2
Revenge #3 (Of 4)
Revival #20
Satellite Sam #8
Spawn #243

Perfect Pulls: Nothing like a comic book cover you have to seriously consider whether or not you can use for your article. Nailbiter has a story that promises to be just as twisted as the cover, as an investigator tries to uncover why so many serial killers have ties to the same quiet town. Needless to say, the answers aren’t likely to be pleasant, and I suspect the investigator is likely to end up a victim before long. If people getting murdered isn’t your thing, you may want to check out Madame Frankenstein instead. Here, someone is brought back to life instead of being murdered, but the consequences may not be any better. Man, death is tricky business.

Perfect Pulls: This week, BOOM! brings us James Tynion IV’s first original comic series, and it has me genuinely worried. I like James, I think he’s a cool guy, but I’m concerned that this book sounds so cool he’ll never be able to hurdle the bar he’s setting! The Woods finds over 500 people who make us the staff and student body of a high school suddenly transported to and left to survive in a twisted wilderness far beyond any reality we know here. Now… what next? Everything about this dynamic is undoubtedly going to tap all the things that make series like Buffy or Morning Glories great, while also having a concept fully unique to itself, and I’m very excited to read it. Also, if you missed the premier of Garth Ennis’ new scifi drama Caliban a few weeks back, today’s your chance to jump into what looks like a promisingly twisted extradimensional adventure.

Those are the highlights for Wednesday, May 7th. Anything you simply can’t live without, or simply can’t imagine reading? Share it in the comments!
