Tyler’s Comic Corner – 5/29 Edition

Posted on May 29, 2013 at 7:26 am by Tyler Waterman

Welcome to Tyler’s Comic Corner, where I highlight the majority of this week’s new comic releases. My highlights include mainstream and indie titles, ensuring your pull list won’t be deprived of one of this week’s gems. My apologies if your favorite isn’t listed, but good news; you clearly already knew it was coming!

Xmen1coverMarvel Releases

Avenging Spider-Man #21
Captain America #7
Dark Avengers #190
Fury MAX #12
Gambit #13
Indestructible Hulk #8
Morbius The Living Vampire #5
New Avengers #6
Savage Wolverine #5
Uncanny X-Force #5
Venom #35
Wolverine And The X-Men #30
X-Men #1

Perfect Pulls: After several delays, finally the ladies get their day. X-Men #1, the newest X-title and the first to feature an all-female X-Men team, hits shelves today with multiple variants and a whole lot of anticipation. The creative team is solid, the book’s lineup is compelling, and more X-Men is never a bad thing, so this book should definitely be a must-buy. The new issue of Captain America brings us closer to finding out if Steve can save his son (and himself), New Avengers #6 brings us one step closer to Infinity, and Dark Avengers #190 is the final step, as this week’s release marks the final issue of the book.

wakecoverDC Releases

Adventures Of Superman #1
Batman The Dark Knight Annual #1
Catwoman Annual #1
Earth 2 Annual #1
Injustice Gods Among Us #5
Justice League Of America #4
Red Hood And The Outlaws Annual #1
Smallville Season 11 Special #1
Wake #1 (Of 10)

Perfect Pulls: This week is all about the annuals for DC, with a few unique new offerings mixed in as well. If you’re already reading any of the titles that have an annual this week, you’ll naturally want to pick it up, but the Earth 2 annual might be worth grabbing regardless of whether you’re reading the monthlies, as it’s the premier of the new Earth 2 Batman. As for the unique offerings, Adventures of Superman brings together top creators to tell unique stories about the Man of Steel, a great character to give the short story treatment to. Also out this week is Wake #1, the first of a ten-part series from Scott Snyder (Batman, Swamp Thing, American Vampire) and Sean Murphy (Punk Rock Jesus). Breaking from the superhero mold, this is a horror story set deep below the sea where secrets we may not want to know have been uncovered. Early reviews have been glowing, so definitely check this out!

fiveweap4coverImage Releases

Chew #34
Clone #7
Elephantmen #48
Five Weapons #4 (Of 5)
Lost Vegas #3 (Of 4)
Mind The Gap #10
Morning Glories #27
Thief Of Thieves #14

Perfect Pulls: The streak is over! After weeks and weeks of a premiering a new title, there is no hot new Image book on the shelves this week, but that doesn’t mean you should avoid your comic shop’s Image section. The penultimate issue of Five Weapons is out, which has been a blast to read, especially for anyone who appreciates a character who puts mind over fists. Of course, Image mainstays Chew, Elephantmen and Morning Glories also have new issues, so you won’t want to miss those, and the next-to-last issue of the scifi gambling epic Lost Vegas is out as well.

Perfect Pulls: It’s a quieter week for the indies, but not without a few gems worth mentioning. Fans of fantasy get the last issue of Dark Horse’s latest Dragon Age adaptation this week, as well as new fantasy title from DH as well. King Conan: Hour of the Dragon adapts the only Conan novel written by Robert E. Howard, and is the perfect way to get yourself ready for the new Conan series announced for 2014. Clive Barker’s newest project Next Testament begins, where a man claiming to be God and another on a walkabout set out to make their mark on the world as they see fit. Finally, fans of the Dinobots (easily the coolest Transformers ever) won’t want to miss Transformers Prime Beast Hunters, which fills in what the Dinobots did after Cybertron was destroyed.

Those are the highlights for Wednesday, May 29th. Anything you simply can’t live without, or simply can’t imagine reading? Share it in the comments!

    • Where is my Daredevil: End of Days?!?!? Arrrrgggghhhh!!!!

      • Delayed until next week, BUT delayed so that it can also come out the same day as a NEW DD miniseries, so I’m ok with this.
