Posted on May 28, 2014 at 6:29 am by Tyler Waterman

Welcome to Tyler’s Comic Corner, where I highlight the majority of this week’s new comic releases. My highlights include mainstream and indie titles, ensuring your pull list won’t be deprived of one of this week’s gems. My apologies if your favorite isn’t listed, but good news; you clearly already knew it was coming!

Perfect Pulls: Been missing your quality time with Thanos since the Illuminati put him into a Jell-O mold at the end of Infinity? Than you want to pick up Thanos Annual #1 today, which tells the tale of one of Thanos’ greatest defeats and sets events into motion that promise to “redefine the Marvel Universe” in the near future. And if special issues are your thing today, also be sure to grab Giant-Size Spider-Man #1, jam-packed with four stories from Spidey’s past. We also have the latest issue of Inhuman, which actually shines thank to Charles Soule, despite Marvel’s Forever Evil-style handling of their Inhumanity event. Finally, are you reading All-New Invaders yet?! Sometimes I feel like I’m the only one, and if that’s the case, I’m totally winning at the game of comics. Go read that book!

Perfect PullsZero Year is in it’s final chapter, and the payoffs are coming fast and hard! (That sounded grosser than I meant it to.) Remember back when we all read Batman #21 and wondered how Gotham got to the point of being overgrown, devastated and protected by a survivalist, dirtbike-riding, bow-and-arrow wielding Batman? Now we know, and now we get to see how we come back from there! Meanwhile, while Batman may be all about new beginnings, this week’s Nightwing #30 marks the end of the series, and the start of a new life for Dick Grayson now that Nightwing can no longer exist. Finally, the Doomed event continues in Superman #31, and speaking of events, be sure to grab He-Man and the Masters of the Universe #13 to discover She-Ra’s origin and the start of the Blood of Greyskull storyline!

trees1covImage Releases

C.O.W.L. #1
Chew Revival #1
Dead Body Road #6 (Of 6)
Deadly Class #5
Elephantmen #57
Fuse #4
Sex #13
Sheltered #9
Skullkickers #27
Southern Bastards #2
Sovereign #3
Thief Of Thieves #21
Trees #1

Perfect Pulls: There are two new offerings from the world of Image today that couldn’t be on more opposite sides of the spectrum. First is C.O.W.L., where Kyle Higgins introduces us to the Chicago Organized Workers League, the first labor union for superheroes. However, just like unions today, there previous successes are being forgotten amidst a public who’s become less convinced it needs to exist, and now the heroes are fighting villains just as much as their fighting public perception. I’ve seen dozens of creators talk about how Higgins is creating an amazing world with this title, so you’ll definitely want to get in at the first issue. Up next we have Trees, the latest scifi-horror mashup from Warren Ellis. This tells the tale of Earth ten years past the landing of giant alien structures that have simply stood all over earth and done nothing else… until now. What they’re going to do we don’t know yet, but Ellis writing combined with Jason Howard’s art talents guarantee my butt will be in the seat to find out.

Perfect Pulls: The crossover event I’ve wanted since I was a kid is finally here! If you’re a fan of all things Mega Man but have been avoiding the comic because you were assuming it was just for kids, today is the perfect excuse to stop thinking that and get on board. Dawn of X begins in today’s Mega Man #37, bringing together Mega Man and Mega Man X for the first time in what promises to be an outstanding event. What’s more, it will lead into an all-new Mega Man X series as well! If you’re a fan of the Blue Bomber in any form, do not sleep on this title any longer! Clive Barker fans also have reason to be excited, as a new Nightbreed comic begins today, based off his cult-favorite film. The book tells the further adventures of a town of monsters that exists unknown to mankind, and promises to be a great read even if you aren’t familiar with the film. Finally, the last of the Gold Key Universe books hits today, with Mark Waid at the helm of Doctor Spektor #1, and considering the quality of all the other Gold Key books, it’s safe to assume you need this one too.

Those are the highlights for Wednesday, May 28th. Anything you simply can’t live without, or simply can’t imagine reading? Share it in the comments!
