Tyler’s Comic Corner – 5/25/16 Edition

Posted on May 25, 2016 at 6:10 am by Tyler Waterman

Welcome to Tyler’s Comic Corner, where I highlight the majority of this week’s new comic releases. My highlights include mainstream and indie titles, ensuring your pull list won’t be deprived of one of this week’s gems. My apologies if your favorite isn’t listed, but good news; you clearly already knew it was coming!

Perfect Pulls: Cap is back, with his coolest costume ever! Well, you know, besides that slick Nomad getup. Steve Rogers: Captain America puts Steve back in the role of Captain America, sharing the title with Sam Wilson in much the same way the two Spider-Men and co-using their name. I love the new suit, I think the new shield is cool, I’m thrilled cranky old Cap is finally gone… needless to say, I’m all in for this book! On top of that, throw in new issues of Amazing Spider-Man, Daredevil, Extraordinary X-Men, Totally Awesome Hulk and the debut of Nighthawk and there’s a lot of love going around for today’s Marvel lineup.

Superman #52
Superman Lois And Clark #8
Teen Titans #20
We Are Robin #12

Perfect Pulls: Finally, I can be emotionally invested in a DC book again! After watching the New 52 limp to the finish line, the beginning of DC’s latest new beginning (redundant, I know) kicks off today in Rebirth #1. There were a bunch of leaks about this issue over the past week, so I’m pretty aware of what I’m going into, and I have to admit I’m looking forward to it. I’m going to play my cards close to my chest, but I really want this to be a success, so here’s hoping I’m able to maintain my optimistic enthusiasm. We also get the final issue of Lois and Clark today, which means the trade for this excellent series can’t be far away, and I can’t wait to add that to my shelves.

Tokyo Ghost #7

Perfect Pulls: Another week with no new titles from Image means I can also spend this week talking about a cool book I haven’t mentioned here in a while. Dream Police is a unique and interesting book that really harkens back to the days when a cool story and good art were all you really needed. In a world where it feels like every comic is doing it’s best to convince you why it’s importantDream Police is just quietly sitting at Image reminding us all that sometimes comics can just be fun. If you love anything that combines the supernatural with a grizzled detective, you’ll love this book!

Perfect Pulls: Why yes, that is a comic adaptation of Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas you see under the IDW section, and yes, I am also kind of shocked that this exists. At the same time, however, I’m kind of not. While I’m not a huge fan of the book or film, I can absolutely see how this story could be told in a fresh new way by the comics medium. I can’t say I’m heading to the store to buy this, but I also suspect this is going to be a lot better than most people will give it credit for. Also, guess what’s back today? Afterlife with Archie makes a triumphant return, because you just can’t keep a good zombie down! No, seriously, you really can’t… better work on those headshots!

Those are the highlights for Wednesday, May 25th. Anything you simply can’t live without, or simply can’t imagine reading? Share it in the comments!
