Tyler’s Comic Corner – 5/22 Edition

Posted on May 22, 2013 at 7:18 am by Tyler Waterman

Welcome to Tyler’s Comic Corner, where I highlight the majority of this week’s new comic releases. My highlights include mainstream and indie titles, ensuring your pull list won’t be deprived of one of this week’s gems. My apologies if your favorite isn’t listed, but good news; you clearly already knew it was coming!

ua8aucovMarvel Releases

A+X #8
Avengers #12
Daredevil #26
Deadpool #10
Fantastic Four #8
Fearless Defenders #4AU
Journey Into Mystery #652
Powers Bureau #4
Scarlet Spider #17
Superior Spider-Man #10
Ultimate Comics Wolverine #4 (Of 4)
Uncanny Avengers #8AU
Uncanny X-Men #6
X-Men Legacy #11
Young Avengers #5

Perfect Pulls: Not often that I can look at the week’s offering from a publisher and be excited for almost every book, but this is definitely one of those weeks when it comes to Marvel. To start, two more Age of Ultron tie-ins debut this week, and as I’ve mentioned before, nearly all of these are more compelling than the actual event itself. This week, find out why the preview of Fearless Defenders #4AU involved a dead Celestial, and then check out Uncanny Avengers #8AU to see how the Apocalypse Twins factor into the event. See the fallout of Peter’s final death in Superior Spider-Man #10, check out how Scott’s team is faring in Hell itself in Uncanny X-Men #6, watch the Young Avengers continue to be awesome in Young Avengers #5, and Lady Bullseye returns in Daredevil #26! Phew!

gl20covDC Releases

All-Star Western #20
Aquaman #20
Arrow #7
Batman Beyond Unlimited #16
Batman Incorporated #11
Batman Li’l Gotham #2
Batman The Dark Knight #20
Flash #20
Fury Of Firestorm The Nuclear Man #20 (Final Issue)
Green Lantern #20
Green Lantern New Guardians #20
Green Team Teen Trillionaires #1
Justice League #20
Justice League Dark #20
Red Lanterns #20
Savage Hawkman #20 (Final Issue)
Superman #20
Talon #8
Teen Titans #20
Unwritten #49

Perfect Pulls: Remember when I said I wanted nearly everything from Marvel this week? I feel the same way about DC. Obviously the highlight is Green Lantern #20, the end of the First Lantern event as well as Geoff Johns’ run on the title. Along with Red Lanterns #20 and New Guardians #20, this week is filled to the brim with Lantern goodness, especially considering GL #20 is an oversized issue. On the Bat-side of things, Batman Incorporated #11 shows us what Bruce is capable of when he’s pushed to his limits, while The Dark Knight #20 continues the intense New 52 reimagining of the Mad Hatter. (You should be reading this, because it’s awesome. No, really.) And finally, two more New 52 books get the ax, as Savage Hawkman and Fury of Firestorm both come to an end this week.

bouncecovImage Releases

Activity #13
Bounce #1
Dia De Los Muertos #3 (Of 3)
Five Ghosts The Haunting Of Fabian Gray #3 (Of 5)
Miniature Jesus #2 (Of 5)
Nowhere Men #5
Revival #10
Sex #3

Perfect Pulls: This week’s awesome new Image title is Bounce, featuring the “feel-good hero” of the decade! Joe Casey and David Messina bring us the slacker hero we didn’t realized we needed, and the badass costume alone is enough to ensure I’ll be checking it out. Also, a new issue of the already-sad-it’s-only-a-miniseries Five Ghosts hits this week, along with a new issue of Sex. If you’ve been avoiding that last one because you assumed from the title that it was just a lewd shock book, don’t; I almost did the same, but it’s actually a really compelling story, and I’m glad I didn’t pass it by.

Judge Dredd #7
KISS Solo #3 (Of 4)(The Celestial)
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Villain Microseries #2 (Of 4)
Transformers Robots In Disguise #17
True Blood #13

Perfect Pulls: IDW has an exciting new title, a cool unique title from The House That Licenses Built. (Not that that’s a bad thing, mind you.) I could give you a lengthy rundown of why Half Past Danger looks good, but it might be more effective to give you the important points: Nazis, dinosaurs, a remote island and a guy named “Irish.” Yea, I knew that would be enough! In the “one and done” category, Dark Horse has two one-shots this week that look good. Mike Mignola’s gun-toting Hellboy vigilante gets his own solo in Lobster Johnson: Satan Smells a Rat, and an undersea horror is unveiled in Deep Sea, featuring the awesome pencils of Wonder Woman’s Tony Akins. Finally, Dynamite’s pulp event extravaganza Masks sees its penultimate chapter hit stands, drawing us closer to the epic conclusion.

Those are the highlights for Wednesday, May 22nd. Anything you simply can’t live without, or simply can’t imagine reading? Share it in the comments!
