Tyler’s Comic Corner – 5/14/14 Edition

Posted on May 14, 2014 at 6:44 am by Tyler Waterman

Welcome to Tyler’s Comic Corner, where I highlight the majority of this week’s new comic releases. My highlights include mainstream and indie titles, ensuring your pull list won’t be deprived of one of this week’s gems. My apologies if your favorite isn’t listed, but good news; you clearly already knew it was coming!

angr3covMarvel Releases

All-New Ghost Rider #3
All-New Ultimates #2
All-New X-Men #27
Avengers #29
Avengers Undercover #4
Captain America #20
Captain Marvel #3
Deadly Hands Of Kung Fu #1 (Of 4)

Fantastic Four #4
Iron Man #25
Marvel Universe Avengers Assemble #8
New Avengers #18
Nightcrawler #2
Secret Avengers #3
United States Of Murder Inc #1
Wolverine #6
X-Force #5

Perfect Pulls: Have I mentioned lately how wrong I was to pre-judge All-New Ghost Rider? If you’ve been skipping this book because you simply can’t believe “Ghost Rider with a car instead” can be awesome, guess what: you’re wrong. This book has been one of the most pleasant surprises coming out of the All-New Marvel NOW, and you don’t want to miss out. Speaking of surprising new titles, Avengers martial artist extraordinaire Shang Chi gets his own solo miniseries this week with Deadly Hands of Kung Fu, marking the first time we see this character in the spotlight since being brought into the Avengers fold last year. This week also has several releases in both the X-Men and Avengers categories, so no matter what side you were on during AvX you’re sure to be well represented.

doomed1covDC Releases

Action Comics #31
Batgirl #31
Batman Eternal #6
Constantine #14
DC Comics Presents The Demon Driven Out #1
Fables #140
FBP Federal Bureau Of Physics #10
Green Lantern Corps #31
Justice League United #1
New 52 Futures End #2
Royals Masters Of War #4 (Of 6)
Scooby-Doo Where Are You #45
Smallville Season 11 Lantern #2 (Of 4)
Superboy #31
Superman Doomed #1 (One Shot)
Superman Wonder Woman #8
Worlds’ Finest #23

Perfect Pulls: Doomsday is back! Though this doesn’t mark the New 52 premier of Doomsday (that took place during Villains’ Month), this week kicks off the Doomed event that promises to slam Superman and Doomsday back together again for another epic showdown. Considering Doomsday is the monster who punched Superman so hard that he died and came back as four people, I have no doubt that this round won’t be any less thrilling. Also, if you want to make sure you’re seeing the whole story, Doomed also crosses over into both Superman Wonder Woman and Action Comics this week as well, so don’t miss those issues either. If Super-punching isn’t your thing, the time travelling summer event Futures End continues this week, while the Lantern event Uprising rolls on in today’s Green Lantern Corps.

Bounce #12
Field #2 (Of 4)
Krampus #5
Mice Templar IV Legend #10
Minimum Wage #5
Shutter #2
Starlight #3
Stray Bullets Killers #3
Tales From The Con Year One
Think Tank Fun With PTSD #1
Walking Dead #127

Perfect Pulls: It’s a new issue of Starlight today! Mark Millar’s latest (and in my opinion best) original title pays the best kind of homage to titles like Flash Gordon with characters you can’t help but immediately love and art from Goran Parlov that’s perfect for the setting. If you tend to avoid Millar books because they usually focus heavily on over-the-top violence, don’t skip this one; it’s nothing like his usual style and so far it shines. Today also sees the first post-All Out War issue of The Walking Dead, and I’m looking forward to seeing if a new arc can break up the monotony the series has been suffering from lately.

Perfect Pulls: It occurred to me while putting together today’s list that I’ve never really talked about one of my favorite indie titles in this space. Dark Horse has been dusting off or creating from scratch great masked vigilante books for some time now, reminding us that they can do tights just as well as lightsabers and wooden stakes, but the first still remains the best. X is one of Dark Horse’s most recognizable titles and characters, a dark and brooding vigilante who can’t be stopped and who’s willing to do anything to eliminate crime, typically in the most bloody way possible. The book is beautiful and brutal at the same time, essentially painting a picture of what would happen if you combined Batman and The Punisher into a one-eyed weapon of justice. If you aren’t squeamish, check this book out. Also this week, IDW taps some classic markets with a new Mars Attacks book as well as reprints of classic Rogue Trooper strips, in color for the first time.

Those are the highlights for Wednesday, May 14th. Anything you simply can’t live without, or simply can’t imagine reading? Share it in the comments!
