Tyler’s Comic Corner – 5/1 Edition

Posted on May 1, 2013 at 12:01 am by Tyler Waterman

Welcome to Tyler’s Comic Corner, where I highlight the majority of this week’s new comic releases. My highlights include mainstream and indie titles, ensuring your pull list won’t be deprived of one of this week’s gems. My apologies if your favorite isn’t listed, but good news; you clearly already knew it was coming!

SUPSM2013009_DC21_02Marvel Releases

Age Of Ultron #7 (Of 10)
All-New X-Men #11
Hawkeye #10
Indestructible Hulk #7
Iron Man #9
Superior Spider-Man #9
Thanos Rising #2 (Of 5)
Ultimate Comics X-Men #26
Winter Soldier #18
X-Factor #255
X-Men Legacy #10

Perfect Pulls: One event starts to come to its conclusion while another just gets started this week. Age of Ultron #7 brings us to the twilight of the time-travel-galore event, as Sue Storm and Logan come back to modern times to find it drastically changed by their killing Hank Pym in the past. But where one event comes to an end, the seeds of the next are being planted over in Thanos Rising #2. Thanos is about to be a big deal in the upcoming Infinity event, and the story of how he became the Mad Titan is being told beautifully in this book. Also, be sure to catch the fallout of Warren joining Cyclops’ Uncanny X-Men in All-New X-Men #11, and perhaps biggest of all, Superior Spider-Man #9 promises to make everyone “angrier than Amazing Spider-Man #700!” With a tagline like that, and considering Dan Slott got death threats for ASM #700, this is a can’t miss book!

Animal Man #20
Aquaman #19

Perfect Pulls: This week’s releases from DC are light but also interesting. Gail Simone’s newest book The Movement #1 premiers this week, about a team of misfit kids who band together to fight the corrupt police force in Coral City. Action Comics #20 promises to reveal the secrets of Lex Luthor, while Detective Comics #20 continues the story of Emperor Penguin, which has quietly been reinventing the Penguin character into something actually cool. No, seriously!

Perfect Pulls: Another week, another new Image title with a fantastic creative team and awesome plot! This week it’s Ten Grand #1, brought to us from the writing guru J. Michael Straczynski and artist extraordinaire Ben Templesmith, tells the story of mob enforcer Joe Fitzgerald. Joe was good at his job, until he meets Laura, the love of his life who convinces him to quit. But before he does, Joe takes one more job, unaware that the target practices demonology. He survives and attacks, killing Laura and nearly killing Joe, when what may be an angel gives a dying Joe an offer. Now, Joe uses his skills for the side of the angels (pun intended), and each time he dies doing good work, before being resurrected he’s granted five minutes with Laura. This is a must-read book of the highest order, and is bound to be Image’s next major sellout, so don’t miss it!

Perfect Pulls: Lots of interesting new titles this week on the indie scene. First, Dynamite adds another title to its spectacular pulp offerings with Black Bat #1, about a mob defense attorney who won’t commit murder for his clients and is tortured and blinded because of it. Offered a chance at revenge by a government agency, he plans to get it, and then some! From Dark Horse comes Mister X: Eviction, an excellent jumping on point for either new or old fans of this classic Dark Horse character. Perhaps most interesting is BOOM! Studios’ Suicide Risk #1. In a world where cops are dying left and right in the losing war against crime, one officer comes across two low-lifes who can apparently grant you a superpower; however, you don’t get to pick the power. Does he take the chance? (I know I would!)

Those are the highlights for Wednesday, May 1st. Anything you simply can’t live without, or simply can’t imagine reading? Share it in the comments!
