Tyler’s Comic Corner – 4/9/14 Edition

Posted on April 9, 2014 at 12:01 am by Tyler Waterman

Welcome to Tyler’s Comic Corner, where I highlight the majority of this week’s new comic releases. My highlights include mainstream and indie titles, ensuring your pull list won’t be deprived of one of this week’s gems. My apologies if your favorite isn’t listed, but good news; you clearly already knew it was coming!

What If Age Of Ultron #2 (Of 5)

Perfect Pulls: If you thought Marvel was done rolling out all-new All-New books (that wasn’t a typo), than this week exists to prove you oh so very wrong. This week sees a crazy assortment of new books, from the long-deserved (Iron Fist The Living Weapon #1) to the much-requested (Nightcrawler #1) to the most unexpected (All-New Doop #1). Along with all the new comes the follow up issue to the spectacular All-New Ghost Rider debut, All-New X-Men hits the quarter century mark, and Superior Foes of Spider-Man continues to out-Hawkeye Hawkeye. It’s a good week for new and old in the world of Marvel.

be1covDC Releases

Astro City #11
Batgirl #30
Batman Eternal #1
Coffin Hill #7
Constantine #13
FBP Federal Bureau Of Physics #9
Green Lantern Corps #30
Justice League 3000 #5
Royals Masters Of War #3 (Of 6)
Scooby-Doo Where Are You #44
Superboy #30
Superman Wonder Woman #7
Worlds’ Finest #22

Perfect Pulls: There are some out there who say there isn’t room for another Batman-related comic from DC. To those who think that I say I weep for your terrible lives where you are unable to appreciate the good things in life. To those of us with working joy receptors, we get a new Batman book today! Not only does Batman Eternal bring us the best and brightest of the Bat-creators in DC today on one book, it’s also weekly, promising Bat-happiness every Wednesday! It’s love at first sight. We also have the latest Superman event Doomed beginning in Superman Wonder Woman #7, which is the first Doomsday event in the New 52. Those rarely go well for Last Sons of Krypton. Throw in the scifi romp Justice League 3000, the ever-awesome Batgirl and a new issue of the always-outstanding Green Lantern Corps and this week from DC becomes a pretty great one.

East Of West #11
Great Pacific #14
Invincible #110
Manifest Destiny #6
Peter Panzerfaust #18
Savage Dragon #194
Shotgun Wedding #2 (Of 4)
Shutter #1
Spawn #242
Walking Dead #125

Perfect Pulls: I was really impressed with the debut issue of Shotgun Wedding last week, predominantly because the “spurned assassin” tale benefited from its fast pace from cover to cover. Finding out this week that the series will be coming out weekly only emphasizes that, and makes this book exceptionally easy to recommend. Along with that comes the latest Image book Shutter, promising a new character that blends everything we like about Lara Croft and Indiana Jones into one new leading lady. And, of course, All Out War continues to rage across the pages of The Walking Dead as well.

Valiant Entertainment:
Bloodshot And H.A.R.D. Corps #21
Unity #6

Perfect Pulls: Remember when I touted books like Millar’s Starlight and Gold Key Comics’ Magnus Robot Fighter for having a very Flash Gordon charm? Remember how I said at the time that I was surprised there wasn’t a Flash Gordon comic? Well, that didn’t take long! Dynamite comes through for me with Flash Gordon #1, bringing all the over-the-top Gordon adventuring you could ask for to shelves one Wednesday a month. Also, I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention that Magnus Robot Fighter book I liked so much had a new issue today, too. And if you love books with tough ladies and a cool style, you may want to check out Lumberjanes. Promising a Buffy-like experience with an Adventure Time aesthetic, this is a book you want to see if that sounds like something you’d enjoy. (How could you not?)

Those are the highlights for Wednesday, April 9th. Anything you simply can’t live without, or simply can’t imagine reading? Share it in the comments!
