Posted on April 24, 2013 at 12:01 am by Tyler Waterman

Welcome to Tyler’s Comic Corner, where I highlight the majority of this week’s new comic releases. My highlights include mainstream and indie titles, ensuring your pull list won’t be deprived of one of this week’s gems. My apologies if your favorite isn’t listed, but good news; you clearly already knew it was coming!

Perfect Pulls: It’s a veritable who’s-who of excellent Marvel NOW titles this week, with some of the best new offerings seeing new issues. Top of the list is of course Uncanny X-Men #5; Scott’s team has been making major moves lately, plus we get to see how the new members of the team fit in. This is also the first issue featuring Frazer Irving on pencils, and if his work on Uncanny is even half as good as it was on Batman and Robin then this is going to be a beautiful new era. Also, all the major Avengers titles see new releases this week, with both Avengers and New Avengers hurtling towards the upcoming Infinity event, and Uncanny rapidly coming into its own after its early struggles. Finally, the latest issue of Guardians of the Galaxy hits shelves today too; hopefully this issue is just as impressive as the first!

Perfect Pulls: The “Vengeance of Batman” starts full swing this week in Batman Incorporated #10. Grant Morrison promised the final three issues would feature Batman tearing down Leviathan in his crusade against the woman who killed his son (not to mention her own), and it all begins here. Over in Red Lanterns #19, we get the penultimate chapter in the Wrath of the First Lantern saga, meaning all that’s left is the upcoming Green Lantern #20, the end of both the storyline and Geoff Johns’ epic run on the Lantern titles. Finally, if you’ve been waiting to see what would become of Bane in the New 52, head over to the Court of Owls spinoff Talon to see how Bane’s plans to take Gotham have to run through Talon first.

Lost Vegas #2 (Of 4)

Mighty Skullkickers #1
Morning Glories #26
Whispers #5
Witch Doctor Mal Practice #6 (Of 6)

Perfect Pulls: Image is typically the home of the most hotly anticipated independent titles, and this week is no exception. Jupiter’s Legacy, from the powerhouse team of Mark Millar and Frank Quitely, focuses not on superheroes themselves, but on their kids. It can be hard enough to be in the shadow of a famous parent, but how do you amount to anything when your parents are famous for saving the world? Early reviews have been falling over themselves to tout this title, and like all Image books, get to your local comic shop early to get one before they’re gone. While you’re there, make sure you don’t miss out on the second issue of Image’s last blockbuster East of West, a new issue from the assassin-comedy Five Weapons, and yet another adjective-laden Skullkickers!

True Blood #12

Perfect Pulls: Lots of great indie titles this week, but Dark Horse has definitely caught my eye with its latest offering. Amala’s Blade tells the story of an assassin who’s been sent on a suicide mission for that exact purpose: her masters don’t want her coming back. The team on this book have created an interesting sounding world, split between technology users and those who can’t, and Amala’s caught in the middle. Preliminary reviews make it sound like watching her get out of there is going to be worth the price of admission. Also, I’ve touted the merits of BOOM!’s Deathmatch here before; this “superpowers trapped in a tournament to the death” title has been tons of fun to read. However, if you haven’t been listening to me, now’s your chance to rectify that, as this week’s issue is the start of the second round and a great jump on point for new readers. Trust me, get on now and you’ll be hunting down the previous issues.

Those are the highlights for Wednesday, April 24th. Anything you simply can’t live without, or simply can’t imagine reading? Share it in the comments!
