Tyler’s Comic Corner – 3/27 Edition

Posted on March 27, 2013 at 12:01 am by Tyler Waterman

Welcome to Tyler’s Comic Corner, where I highlight the majority of this week’s new comic releases. My highlights include mainstream and indie titles, ensuring your pull list won’t be deprived of one of this week’s gems. My apologies if your favorite isn’t listed, but good news; you clearly already knew it was coming!

Perfect Pulls: Were you one of those folks who made the silly assumption that Age of Ultron was self-contained and didn’t require you to buy several tie-in books? Well, guess again! Marvel’s “point one” books reappear again this week, for the first time since Marvel NOW! began, but this time they aren’t considered “jumping on points” for new readers. Instead, titles such as Superior Spider-Man 6.1 and Fantastic Four 5.1 are Age of Ultron tie-in books, showing how the respective characters found themselves in this latest struggle. While many hate the idea of being forced to buy books from titles they wouldn’t otherwise look twice at, Age of Ultron has proved to be pretty compelling, and given the “how did we get here” way it’s being told, these books are likely to be worth your dollars. Also, Guardians of the Galaxy #1 finally drops today! Marvel’s “Avengers in space” kick off in a big way this week, so jump in now to discover just how cool Marvel’s cosmic side truly is!

binc9DC Releases

All-Star Western #18
Aquaman #18
Arrow #5
Batman Incorporated #9
Batman The Dark Knight #18
Flash #18
Fury Of Firestorm The Nuclear Man #18
I Vampire #18
Injustice Gods Among Us #3

Justice League Dark #18
Red Lanterns #18
Savage Hawkman #18
Superman #18
Talon #6
Teen Titans #18
Time Warp #1
Unwritten #47

Perfect Pulls: Grant Morrison’s epic Batman run is coming to a close, and now that he’s killed Robin, he’s promised his final issues will feature the “Vengeance of Batman,” and that vengeance begins this week in Batman Incorporated #9. While we’ve seen the fallout of the death of Robin across the other Bat-titles, this will be our first chance to see Bruce’s reaction immediately following Robin’s fall, and that promises to be a must-read book. Also, the Wrath of the First Lantern continues in Red Lanterns #18, where we get to see the First Lantern tear apart the past of more characters as he gains the strength he needs to fully unlease his, well, wrath. Lastly, fans of DC’s Vertigo side will want to grab Time Warp #1, an anthology that brings together some of DC’s best and brightest to tell (or re-tell) some classic tales, promising several “blasts from the past.”

Hack Slash #25
Legend Of Luther Strode #4 (Of 6)
Morning Glories #25
Planetoid #5
Savage Skullkickers #1
Think Tank #6
Witch Doctor Mal Practice #5 (Of 6)

Perfect Pulls: Was one new Skullkickers title just not enough for you? Were you concerned that there simply weren’t enough adjectives preceding their titles? You’re in luck! Hot off the heels of Uncanny Skullkickers, here comes Savage Skullkickers #1, featuring bold new emphasis on classic characters and a title that is in no way supposed to look exactly like Savage Wolverine! (Despite the identical fonts and cover styles…) Also, fans of Hack/Slash won’t want to miss this latest issue, which is the series finale. It promises even more over-the-top carnage and destruction than we’ve already come to expect, if you can possibly believe that.

mwgh1Indie Releases

Crossed Badlands #26 (Avatar)
Ferals #13 (Avatar)

Sherlock Holmes The Liverpool Demon #3 (Of 5) (Dynamite)
Doctor Who #7 (IDW)

My Little Pony Friendship Is Magic #5 (IDW)
Star Trek #19 (IDW)
Transformers Robots In Disguise #15 (IDW)
Transfusion #3 (Of 3) (IDW)
Vitriol The Hunter #2 (Of 6) (IDW)

Perfect Pulls: I could not be more excited about Mark Waid’s Green Hornet #1. I’ve been a huge fan of Dynamite’s monthly Green Hornet title, but ever since the creative team changed the book has gone in a direction that has really left me wondering if I’d even continue reading it. However, my love of the characters and the mythos surrounding it is still very much intact, and my love of all things Mark Waid is nearly as strong, so I couldn’t be happier that I have a new Green Hornet title to look forward to. Dark Horse also has a couple new titles this week that look to be worth a look. B.P.R.D.: Vampire #1 is the direct sequel to the exceptional B.P.R.D.: 1948, so if you loved that, don’t miss this new book. Also, Dark Horse returns to the fantasy world of Dragon Age with Until We Sleep #1, a three-part miniseries that is considered canon to the entire franchise and is written by the lead writer of the video games the franchise emerged from.

Those are the highlights for Wednesday, March 27th. Anything you simply can’t live without, or simply can’t imagine reading? Share it in the comments!
