Tyler’s Comic Corner – 2/6 Edition

Posted on February 6, 2013 at 1:46 am by Tyler Waterman

Welcome to Tyler’s Comic Corner, where I highlight the majority of this week’s new comic releases. My highlights include mainstream and indie titles, ensuring your pull list won’t be deprived of one of this week’s gems. My apologies if your favorite isn’t listed, but good news; you clearly already knew it was coming!

newavenge3Marvel Releases

All-New X-Men #7
Avengers #5
Avengers Assemble Annual #1
Daredevil End Of Days #5 (Of 8)
Fearless Defenders #1
Hit-Girl #5 (Of 5)
Iron Man #6
Marvel’s Iron Man 3 Prelude #2 (Of 2)
New Avengers #3
Red She-Hulk #62
Road To Oz #5 (Of 6)
Scarlet #6
Secret Avengers #37
Superior Spider-Man #3
Thunderbolts #4
Ultimate Comics Spider-Man #20
Venom #31
Winter Soldier #15
X-Factor #251

Perfect Pulls: Remember last week when Marvel had a pretty quiet week? This week is a bit louder! The top highlight of the week has to be New Avengers #3; this book is easily one of the smartest and most compelling comics being published right now, and this member sees a new member join the Illuminati that you won’t want to miss. This week also sees new releases for some of the best titles in the Marvel NOW lineup, including All-New X-Men, Iron Man, and Avengers (also known as “the good Avengers book”). And because a week wouldn’t seem complete without another NOW premier, Fearless Defenders starts today, a book featuring Valkyrie and Misty Knight that will definitely be worth investigating, but I suspect won’t run for very long.

detcom17DC Releases

Animal Man #17
Batwing #17
Detective Comics #17
Dial H #9
Earth 2 #9
Fairest #12
Green Arrow #17
Human Bomb #3 (Of 4)

Legends Of The Dark Knight #5
Phantom Stranger #5
Smallville Season 11 #10
Stormwatch #17
Swamp Thing #17
Worlds’ Finest #9
Young Romance A New 52 Valentine’s Day Special #1

Perfect Pulls: Another of DC’s plentiful crossover events comes to its conclusion this week, across both Animal Man #17 and Swamp Thing #17. Both of these books have been two of the biggest and best surprises of the New 52, so this is either your chance to sit down and read the entire excellent event, or serves as your notice that the next issues may be a great jumping on point. Also, Batman fans need to check out Detective Comics #17. While not directly a part of Death of the Family, this follow-up issue finds Batman hunting down the League of Smiles, a group of killers obsessed with the Joker. And finally, fans of the adorable should check out Young Romance, a collection of stories showing how love is in the air in the DCU that also comes with real Valentines.

Snapshot #1 (Of 4)
Son Of Merlin #1
Super Dinosaur #17
Think Tank #5
Youngblood #76

Perfect Pulls: It’s a week of interesting new premiers from Image, with three new books worth checking out. First is Son of Merlin, where a young professor at MIT discovers he’s the bastard son of Merlin himself, and now has to deal with the fallout of this revelation. From magic to murder, Snapshot follows the tale of a kid who finds a cell phone filled with photos of a brutal murder, and now the hitman who lost that phone wants it back, and the kid dead. Finally, Dia De Los Muertas combines the art of Riley Rossmo with macabre stories written by nine different authors, all inspired by the Mexican Day of the Dead. If you’re looking for new reads, Image is your source this week!

Transformers Spotlight Megatron (One Shot) (IDW)
Harbinger #0 (Valiant)
Shadowman #4 (Valiant)

Perfect Pulls: Don’t let the name fool you, BOOM!’s Fairy Quest isn’t what it sounds like. Written by Paul Jenkins and drawn by Humberto Ramos (the most distinct artist in comics today this side of Francis Manapul), Fairy Quest tells the story of Red Riding Hood and her wolf in a very different fairy tale land than one might expect. Also, if you miss The Boys as much as I do, Garth Ennis is back with Read Team. Previews essentially make this out to be “Garth Ennis does The Shield,” and I’m very much ok with that. Finally, if you’ve been reading all the Valiant books (and if you haven’t you should be), Harbinger #0 brings new details to light regarding their entire line, so don’t miss this issue.

Those are the highlights for Wednesday, February 6th. Anything you simply can’t live without, or simply can’t imagine reading? Share it in the comments!

Daredevil: End of Days & Animal Man/Swamp Thing are on the top of my pile this week!

I am resisting my urge to buy Earth 2 due to very tepid reviews; they are introducing Dr Fate into the New 52 an I am a huge Dr Fate fan. Hrmm…

      • DD is cool but is this really the end of him? Are we just looking at a replacement? That whole bit about you can't have a Daredevil without Kingpin only applies to Murdock, correct? Some new Daredevil can have his own little nemesis that's not Bullseye or Kingpin. If that's the case, Murdock hit the reset button with the deaths of Kingpin, Bullseye, and himself.

Every person Urich speaks to goes on and on about how they're aren't that person anymore. It was a lifetime ago. That is code for passing on the torch. What happens after these 8 issues? Is there a new DD title lined up?!?! Why didn't we talk about this on the podcast?

I don't think we are looking at a replacement in the sense of them launcing a new book set in the future… I just think this is just Marvel's version of "The Dark Knight Returns." An interesting what-if glimpse into the end of this current generation of heroes that we know. Its a rarity coming from the big 2, and I am enjoying the crap out of it.

When issue #8 hits have no doubt we will be chatting about this one on the podcast!
