Tyler’s Comic Corner – 2/20 Edition

Posted on February 20, 2013 at 11:36 am by Tyler Waterman

Welcome to Tyler’s Comic Corner, where I highlight the majority of this week’s new comic releases. My highlights include mainstream and indie titles, ensuring your pull list won’t be deprived of one of this week’s gems. My apologies if your favorite isn’t listed, but good news; you clearly already knew it was coming!

Nova_01_CoverMarvel Releases

Alpha Big Time #1 (Of 5)
Avengers #6
Captain America #4
Captain Marvel #10
Daredevil #23
Dark Avengers #187
Deadpool #5
Indestructible Hulk #4
Morbius The Living Vampire #2
Nova #1
Savage Wolverine #2
Superior Spider-Man #4
Thor God Of Thunder #5
Ultimate Comics The Ultimates #21
Wolverine MAX #4
X-Factor #252

Perfect Pulls: I’m always prepared to be pleasantly surprised, but I suspect this week is going to be the tale of two teen heroes, and how one can be far more interesting than the other. On one hand, this week sees the premier of Nova, a comic I’ve really been looking forward to. The cosmic side of Marvel is fantastic and underappreciated, and the Nova Corps has always been the best part, so a new Nova is something I’m all for. On the other, we also see the return of Alpha in Alpha: Big Time. Alpha was an almost unreadable character in Amazing Spider-Man; I’m keeping an open mind, but I suspect there is one teen hero I’ll love this week and one that I won’t. Other than the teens, be sure to grab the exceptional Thor God of Thunder and Indestructable Hulk, two of Marvel NOW’s freshest books. Also, the first issue of Morbius The Living Vampire was surprisingly good, so be sure to check out the new issue of that as well.

JLA-1-coverDC Releases

Action Comics #17
Batman Beyond Unlimited #13
Batwoman #17
Birds Of Prey #17
Catwoman #17
DC Universe Presents #17
Fables #126
Green Lantern #17
Green Lantern Corps #17
Green Lantern New Guardians #17
Hellblazer #300
JSA The Liberty Files The Whistling Skull #3 (Of 6)
Justice League #17
Justice League Of America #1
Justice League Of America’s Vibe #1
Legion Of Super-Heroes #17
Nightwing #17
Red Hood And The Outlaws #17
Supergirl #17
Sword Of Sorcery #5
Wonder Woman #17
Young Justice #25

Perfect Pulls: Starting this week, every month will bring twice the Justice from DC. As the Justice League struggles in the battle over the Throne of Atlantis (which concludes in Justice League #17), the backup team gets its chance to shine in Justice League of America #1. There are a few really surprising characters on this team, including Catwoman and the hopefully-not-as-stereotypical Vibe, so seeing this team come together should be an interesting ride. Lantern fans just saw Rise of the Third Army come to a close, but endings are truly just beginnings, as this week the Wrath of the First Lantern begins across all the Lantern titles, starting in Green Lantern #17. Also, Bat-fans won’t want to miss the post-Death of the Family fallout that continues in Nightwing and Red Hood and the Outlaws, and history comes to a close this week with Hellblazer #300, the final issue in the long-running occult hit.

Happy #4 (Of 4)
It Girl And The Atomics #7
Revival #7
Saga #10
Spawn #228
Thief Of Thieves #12

Perfect Pulls: A light week from Image this week, even for them, but definitely not without some worthy titles hitting shelves. In particular, Grant Morrison’s Happy comes to a close this week. Like all things Morrison, this is one of those books with a lot going on between the lines and some brutal action, and I for one am sad it’s only four issues long. Also, Image fans certainly won’t miss new issues in two of the most popular comics from the imprint, Saga and Thief of Thieves, and company flagship Spawn continues as well.

Vitriol The Hunter #1 (Of 6) (IDW)
Womanthology Space #5 (Of 5) (IDW)
Harbinger #9 (Valiant)
X-O Manowar #10 (Valiant)

Perfect Pulls: I frequently use this space to tout the greatness of Dynamite’s noir titles, and this week they’ve given me another title with which to do that! Be sure to check out Shadow: Year One; first-year books are always a fun read, and it looks to have the same quality as all the other noir offerings from Dynamite. Fans of IDW’s G.I. Joe titles also get a new book this week, with the launch of G.I. Joe #1, where the Joe team is no longer a secret and now fights COBRA in the public eye. Also, speaking of things I love to rant about, Valiant fans like myself should all be grabbing X-O Manowar #10, which concludes the prelude to the impending human/Vine war that promises to change the whole Valiant world.

Those are the highlights for Wednesday, February 20th. Anything you simply can’t live without, or simply can’t imagine reading? Share it in the comments!
