Tyler’s Comic Corner – 1/30 Edition

Posted on January 30, 2013 at 12:50 pm by Tyler Waterman

Welcome to Tyler’s Comic Corner, where I highlight the majority of this week’s new comic releases. My highlights include mainstream and indie titles, ensuring your pull list won’t be deprived of one of this week’s gems. My apologies if your favorite isn’t listed, but good news; you clearly already knew it was coming!

xmenleg5Marvel Releases

Avengers #4
Dark Avengers #186
Hawkeye #7
Journey Into Mystery #648
Punisher Nightmare #5 (Of 5)
Punisher War Zone #4 (Of 5)
Silver Surfer By Stan Lee And Moebius #1 (One Shot)
Superior Spider-Man #2
X-Men Legacy #5
X-Treme X-Men #9

Perfect Pulls: You’ll see below that DC has a powerhouse lineup this week; can’t quite say the same for Marvel, but there are a few gems to be had. You may have flipped through the first issues and came away unimpressed, but X-Men Legacy has started to come into its own, and you may want to re-investigate this book. Of course the new Superior Spider-Man is a must-have book, and if Uncanny Avengers has left you as disappointed as it’s left me, then be sure to check out Avengers, sans the Uncanny. This book has been much more impressive, and I honestly can’t help be feel this has more claim to being the flagship of NOW than Uncanny Avengers ever has.

Perfect Pulls: What a massive week for DC, with tons of great books just begging to take your money! Batman fans know to always grab Batman Incorporated, but also be sure not to miss Batman and Robin Annual #1, which promises to completely change the way we look at Bruce Wayne. Fans of all things Lantern can’t miss the Green Lantern Corps Annual #1, which features the stunning conclusion to the Rise of the Third Army event. Also, we get a double dose of He-Man goodness, with the final issue of the miniseries and an epic one shot as well, leading into a brand new ongoing series!

invincible100Image Releases

Activity #11
Darkness #110
Glory #32
Hack Slash #23
Invincible #100
MacGyver Fugitive Gauntlet #4 (Of 5)
Mara #2 (Of 6)
Nowhere Men #3
Spawn #227

Perfect Pulls: It’s finally here… Invincible #100 hits shelves today. Normally, milestone issues are something to be excited about, but this is a Kirkman-written milestone. I often describe Robert Kirkman as “the George R. R. Martin of comics,” and milestone issues are where this comparison is always most accurate. Expect death, expect a lot of it, and expect no one to be safe. Also, the critically acclaimed Glory is now only two issues away from ending, so be sure to check out that excellent book as well.

Indie Releases

Crossed Badlands #22 (Avatar)
Night Of The Living Dead Aftermath #1 (Avatar)
hyrulehistoriaAdventure Time #12 (BOOM!)
Deathmatch #2 (BOOM!)
Angel And Faith #18 (Dark Horse)
Criminal Macabre Final Night The 30 Days Of Night Crossover #2 (Of 4) (Dark Horse)
Emily And The Strangers #1 (Of 3) (Dark Horse)
Legend Of Zelda Hyrule Historia (Dark Horse)
Orchid #12 (Dark Horse)
R.I.P.D. City Of The Damned #3 (Of 4) (Dark Horse)
Star Wars Agent Of The Empire Hard Targets #4 (Of 5) (Dark Horse)
Damsels #5 (Dynamite)
Dark Shadows #13 (Dynamite)
Flash Gordon Zeitgeist #9 (Dynamite)
Green Hornet #33 (Dynamite)
Pantha #6 (Dynamite)
Robert Jordan’s The Wheel Of Time The Eye Of The World #32 (Dynamite)
Shadow #9 (Dynamite)
Doctor Who Prisoners Of Time #1 (Of 12) (IDW)
Mars Attacks Zombies Vs Robots (One Shot) (IDW)

Perfect Pulls: Typically I don’t list compilations or trades on these lists, but Dark Horse has a pretty cool release this week that merits mentioning. The Legend of Zelda Hyrule Historia is the ultimate comprehensive collection of all things Zelda, including never-before-seen art and story info and an intro from Shigeru Miyamoto himself. Perhaps even more impressive, it includes the first official timeline of all the Zelda games, which fans of the series have been debating for years. Don’t let that distract you from the actually-comics indie releases, though! Deathmatch returns after an extremely impressive first issue, Dynamite’s noir franchises continue in both Green Hornet and Shadow, and IDW premiers a new Doctor Who mini-series this week as well.

Those are the highlights for Wednesday, January 30th. Anything you simply can’t live without, or simply can’t imagine reading? Share it in the comments!
