Tyler’s Comic Corner – 1/29/14 Edition

Posted on January 29, 2014 at 12:01 am by Tyler Waterman

Welcome to Tyler’s Comic Corner, where I highlight the majority of this week’s new comic releases. My highlights include mainstream and indie titles, ensuring your pull list won’t be deprived of one of this week’s gems. My apologies if your favorite isn’t listed, but good news; you clearly already knew it was coming!

ssm26Marvel Releases

Avengers Assemble #23.INH
Cataclysm The Ultimates’ Last Stand #4 (Of 5)
Guardians Of The Galaxy #11.NOW
Inhumanity #2
Marvel Universe Hulk And The Agents Of S.M.A.S.H. #4 (Of 4)
Miracleman #2
Night Of The Living Deadpool #2 (Of 4)
Revolutionary War Knights Of Pendragon #1
Superior Spider-Man #26
Thor God Of Thunder #18
Thunderbolts #21
Uncanny Avengers #16
Uncanny X-Force #17
X-Men Legacy #23

Perfect Pulls: Today marks the beginning of the end for the Superior Spider-Man. The Goblin War
begins in Superior Spider-Man #26, bringing the forces of Hobgoblin and the Green Goblin against each other with New York as the battlefield. As any Spider-Man fan can attest, this many goblins can not be good, especially since we all know Doc Ock Spidey’s days are numbered. Inhumanity continues this week as well, hopefully shedding more light on what happens now that a third of the world is Inhuman. And the stellar crossover The Trial of Jean Grey continues in Guardians of the Galaxy #11.NOW, where once again the Shi’ar look to score some Phoenix revenge. Add in great books like Thor God of Thunder starting a new arc and Thunderbolts reminding us that Johnny Blaze is a badass and you’ve got a pretty great week from Marvel.

Teen Titans #27
Worlds’ Finest Annual #1

Perfect Pulls: There is a lot to talk about from DC this week, but there is one title that absolutely takes the top spot for me. Batman and Robin has defied the odds and remained an outstanding title, despite one of the titular characters meeting his end. It’s since become Batman and…, a team-up book of sorts, but this week Robin returns to the title, and this time it’s the prodigal sidekick. This week we get a rare glimpse at Dick Grayson’s time as Robin in the New 52. If that isn’t enough Robin action for you, we also get the last issue of the Damian Son of Batman miniseries, so first and last are well represented. Also exciting is a reveal I’ve been dying to get, as Earth 2 Annual #2 finally takes the cowl off and reveals the origin of the new Batman. Moral of the story is, it’s a very good week for Bat-fans.

fiveweap6Image Releases

Black Science #3
Bounce #9
Clone #14
Cyber Force #8
East Of West #9
Five Weapons #6
Invincible #108
Revival #17
Saga #18
Saviors #2
Super Dinosaur #21
Thief Of Thieves #19
Witchblade #172

Perfect Pulls: One of the best things about the Image business model is that it reacts to its fans. If a miniseries sells like crazy, and the fans want more, what was once limited becomes a monthly book. Five Ghosts got that treatment recently, and now the latest is Five Weapons, continuing the story of an assassin school where nothing is what it seems. Bounce also has a new issue, that will likely answer one question just to leave you with two more. And although scifi comics are coming out of the woodwork, don’t let over-saturation keep you from reading the fantastic Black Science.

Perfect Pulls: This week is exceptionally light when it comes to the indies. If you’re a fan of Cartoon Network comic adaptations, both Adventure Time and Bravest Warriors have special issues this week. Speaking of adaptations, another show comes in comic form, and it’s pretty sweet. Like Buffy and Angel before it, Serenity now gets the Dark Horse additional season treatment, continuing the adventures of the space captain second only to Han Solo himself, Captain Mal. Dark Horse also has another of its new super hero books in Furious, featuring the first superhero looking to punch her way to redemption. I can’t think of a better way to get there.

Those are the highlights for Wednesday, January 29th. Anything you simply can’t live without, or simply can’t imagine reading? Share it in the comments!
