Tyler’s Comic Corner – 12/31/13 Edition

Posted on December 31, 2013 at 12:01 am by Tyler Waterman

Welcome to Tyler’s Comic Corner, where I highlight the majority of this week’s new comic releases. My highlights include mainstream and indie titles, ensuring your pull list won’t be deprived of one of this week’s gems. My apologies if your favorite isn’t listed, but good news; you clearly already knew it was coming!

SFSM7Marvel Releases

Guardians Of The Galaxy #10
New Avengers #13.INH
Savage Wolverine #13
Superior Foes Of Spider-Man #7

Perfect Pulls: Another major holiday means another light week of releases from Marvel, but just like last week, a small quantity doesn’t mean a lack of quality. Of course, I’m sure you’ll be grabbing the latest Superior Foes of Spider-Man, seeing as how it was picked as one of the sleeper hits of the year on the Comic Corner PodcastNew Avengers promises a new chapter for the Illuminati, which means new members, or perhaps a whole new Illuminati entirely? Finally, Savage Wolverine promises that Logan finds what he’s looking for in Madripoor (which is never a good thing), and the latest Guardians of the Galaxy brings us a hunting trip with Angela and Gamorra. Ladies night out indeed!

Perfect Pulls: Marvel may have taken another week off, but the DC shelf at your comic shop is going to look like business as usual this week, with a full release schedule today. Batman fans get to ring in the new year in style, with a wide variety of books to look forward to. The Dark Knight #26 looks like it may be a classic, with a chilling Chris Burnham cover and an almost-entirely-silent story. The what-could-have-been epic Damian: Son of Batman continues, with Damian running a gauntlet of his father’s worst enemies, and Batwoman features a guest spot from Batman and a new villain for the Kanes to deal with. Under the sea, the Jeff Parker era begins in Aquaman, with tensions rising again between the surface world and Atlantis. Finally, Sandman fans will recognize the Dead Boy Detectives, who get a stand-alone series beginning today.

RG3Image Releases

Artifacts #33
Clone #13
Manhattan Projects #17
Rocket Girl #3
Sin Boldly (One Shot)
Todd The Ugliest Kid On Earth #8

Perfect Pulls: Image has a new book on shelves, but don’t worry, it’s just a one-shot this time. That being said, if you’re a fan of the infamous Dawn series, you’ll want to make sure you grab Sin Boldly, which features short-stories from Joseph Michael Linsner. These stories harken back to those he wrote in Cry For Dawn, so longtime fans will find a lot to love with this solo book. Also this week is the latest issue of Rocket Girl, another series we found to be one of the best sleeper hits of the year. If you haven’t been reading this book, it simply has too much wit, charm and uniqueness to be avoided!

Perfect Pulls: This week’s indie releases are loaded with interesting new books, particularly from Dark Horse. First up is Juice Squeezers, a Goonies-style tale of scrawny kids that are the only ones who can defend their town from the giant bugs tunneling beneath it. While that sounds awesome enough, Dark Horse also has a new Hellboy spinoff in Baltimore: Chapel of Blood, and a twisted tale of a human whose blood kills vampires, and he’s out to use it on all of them. Dynamite has a new Twilight Zone comic, which will be interesting to see if it can capture the feel of the classic show, as well as Legenderry, which gives a steampunk take on some of IDW’s best known characters. Finally, BOOM! brings us Revelations, a mystery thriller from the creators of Fairy Quest. In other words, the indies are loaded with cool new books you should check out this week!

Those are the highlights for Wednesday, December 31st. Anything you simply can’t live without, or simply can’t imagine reading? Share it in the comments!
