Tyler’s Comic Corner – 1/23 Edition

Posted on January 23, 2013 at 9:40 am by Tyler Waterman

Welcome to Tyler’s Comic Corner, where I highlight the majority of this week’s new comic releases. My highlights include mainstream and indie titles, ensuring your pull list won’t be deprived of one of this week’s gems. My apologies if your favorite isn’t listed, but good news, you clearly already knew it was coming!

Marvel Releases

UXF1A+X #4
Astonishing X-Men #58
Avengers #3
Castle A Calm Before The Storm #2 (Of 5)
Deadpool #4
Deadpool Killustrated #1 (Of 4)
FF #3
Gambit #8
Punisher Nightmare #4 (Of 5)
Ultimate Comics The Ultimates #20
Uncanny Avengers #3
Uncanny X-Force #1
Winter Soldier #14
Wolverine And The X-Men #24
Young Avengers #1

Perfect Pulls: It may be a quiet week as far as quantity goes, but two of the freshest and most interesting new Marvel NOW offerings drop this week, making this a week you’ll definitely want to check the Marvel shelves at your local shop. Young Avengers is a title I’ve been dying to read since the “reboot that isn’t” was announced; if you weren’t reading Journey into Mystery before NOW began, here’s your chance to discover the sublime joy that is Kid Loki. Also, Uncanny X-Force begins this week, which brings together a cast of characters that may be too obscure to generate great sales, but is awesome for long-term fans of X-books like myself. Seeing characters like Puck and Spiral on an X-Team is just awesome, and I’m dying to see what Cluster (one of the three Fantomex brains now in a body of her own) brings to the table. It may not have Wolverine or Cyclops on the cover, but don’t miss this X-book!

DC Releases

GL16Batwoman #16
Before Watchmen Minutemen #6 (Of 6)
Birds Of Prey #16
Blue Beetle #16
Catwoman #16
DC Universe Presents #16
Fables #125
Green Lantern #16
Green Lantern Corps #16
Green Lantern New Guardians #16
Hellblazer #299
JSA The Liberty Files The Whistling Skull #2 (Of 6)
Justice League #16
Legion Of Super-Heroes #16
Nightwing #16
Red Hood And The Outlaws #16
Saucer Country #11
Superboy Annual #1
Supergirl #16
Sword Of Sorcery #4
Wonder Woman #16
Young Justice #24

Perfect Pulls: If you’ve been following all the different crossover events going on in the DCU right now, this is a good (and expensive) week for you! Rise of the Third Army is coming to a close, and this week sees releases in all three of the main GL titles, each promising major ramifications as the story nears its end. Green Lantern #16 in particular is exciting, as this is the first time Simon Baz meets the rest of the Corps! Fans of Death of the Family aren’t being left behind either, as both Nightwing and Red Hood and the Outlaws tie directly to the event. Along with those, H’el on Earth continues in both Superboy Annual #1 and Supergirl #16, and the Throne of Atlantis event that’s been very promising so far continues in Justice League #16.

Image Releases

prophet33Bedlam #3, $3.50
Chew #31, $2.99
It Girl And The Atomics #6, $2.99
Prophet #33, $3.99
Revival #6, $2.99
Witch Doctor Mal Practice #3 (Of 6)
Witchblade #163

Perfect Pulls: Fans of the “gross and wacky” side of Image are in for a good week this week, with new releases in both the critically-acclaimed series Chew, as well as the dark and disgusting Witch Doctor Mal Practice. Speaking of critically acclaimed, now is as good a time as any to check out the recently redone Prophet. This isn’t the Liefeld-created 90’s Prophet we once knew; this book is sharp and unlike almost anything out there. I can’t tell you how many “Best of 2012” lists I found Prophet on, so definitely check this book out.

Indie Releases

Dan The Unharmable #9 (Avatar)
Clive Barker’s Hellraiser The Road Below #4 (Of 4) (BOOM!)
Steed And Mrs Peel #4 (BOOM!)
Buffy The Vampire Slayer Spike #5 (Of 5) (Dark Horse)

Borderlands Origins #3 (Of 4) (IDW)
Cobra #21 (IDW)
Godzilla #9 (IDW)
Judge Dredd #3 (IDW)
Mars Attacks Transformers (One Shot) (IDW)
Star Trek Countdown To Darkness #1 (IDW)
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Secret History Of The Foot Clan #2 (Of 4) (IDW)
Harbinger #8 (Valiant)
X-O Manowar #9 (Valiant)

Perfect Pulls: Recently, I’ve been realizing that writer Dennis Hopeless is probably a mutant, and his mutant power is writing books that I don’t think have any potential, but end up turning out to be fantastic titles (Avengers Arena is a great example). That being said, we should all be giving The Answer #1 a shot, regardless of how silly his costume looks. Also, if you’ve been looking for a good jump-on point to get into the Buffy comics as Season 9 is about to begin, the Buffyverse Sampler is a great place to start as it collects the first issues of the four different series Dark Horse launched to lead into the new season. Finally, Trek fans who are hotly anticipating the new movie coming out this year won’t want to miss Star Trek: Countdown to Darkness. This is a four-part prequel to the movie, and while most tie-ins are hard to recommend, IDW handles their licensed properties with the same level of quality and care that the Big Two give their flagships: if you’re excited about the movie, you should be just as excited for this series as well.

Those are the highlights for Wednesday, January 23rd. Anything you simply can’t live without, or simply can’t imagine reading? Share it in the comments!
