Tyler’s Comic Corner 12/26 Edition

Posted on December 26, 2012 at 3:52 pm by Tyler Waterman

Welcome to Tyler’s Comic Corner, where I highlight the majority of this week’s new comic releases. My highlights include mainstream and indie titles, ensuring your pull list won’t be deprived of one of this week’s gems. My apologies if your favorite isn’t listed, but good news; you clearly already knew it was coming!

Spider ManMarvel Releases

Amazing Spider-Man #700
Avenging Spider-Man #15.1

Perfect Pulls: The last Marvel release of the year is by far the most important, as Amazing Spider-Man #700 brings to a close a both an era and a fifty year comic. One very important thing to note: DON’T READ Avenging Spider-Man #15.1 until you’ve read ASM #700; Avenging is very much it’s prologue.

justiceleague15DC Releases

Aquaman #15
Before Watchmen Nite Owl #4 (Of 4)
Justice League #15

Perfect Pulls: Another quiet but important week, as another crossover event begins. Throne of Atlantis begins in Justice League #15, with part two in Aquaman #15, and pits the League against an Atlantis bent on attacking the surface. Geoff Johns has made Aquaman one of the most compelling heroes in the League, and this event looks to make waves in the DCU (sorry), so be sure to check both these books out.

maraImage Releases

Hip Flask: Ouroboros
Mara #1 (Of 6)

Perfect Pulls: Just two books from Image this week, but both are getting rave reviews. Hip Flask: Ouroboros is the follow up to the Eisner award winning Hip Flask: Mystery City, and Mara begins a series about the repercussions of an athlete exhibiting powers in a modern society that’s obsessed with sport and violence. Gritty “if powers really appeared” storylines are typically worth investigating, so give this a shot.

deathmatchIndie Releases

Crossed Badlands #20 (Avatar)
Deathmatch #1 (BOOM!)
Shadow Special #1 (Dynamite)

Perfect Pulls: Deathmatch is a book that can’t be missed this week. In it, all the superheroes have been locked on a prison world and are forced to fight to the death, which already has my attention. Even better, the first issue is only a dollar; that’s an introductory price that makes trying a new book totally worth it. Also, anyone following the Masks event going on across Dynamite should be sure to grab the Shadow Special; it isn’t part of the crossover, but if you’re enjoying Masks you’ll enjoy this!

Those are the highlights for Wednesday, December 26th. Anything you simply can’t live without, or simply can’t imagine reading? Share it in the comments!
