Tyler’s Comic Corner – 1/22/14 Edition

Posted on January 22, 2014 at 12:01 am by Tyler Waterman

Welcome to Tyler’s Comic Corner, where I highlight the majority of this week’s new comic releases. My highlights include mainstream and indie titles, ensuring your pull list won’t be deprived of one of this week’s gems. My apologies if your favorite isn’t listed, but good news; you clearly already knew it was coming!

Origin II #2 (Of 5)
Superior Spider-Man Team-Up #9
Wolverine And The X-Men #40
X-Men #9

Perfect Pulls: There are all sorts of books to be excited about this week, but none fills my head with as much glee as All-New Invaders #1… the freakin’ Invaders are back! The first super-team of the Marvel universe and the face of the allies in World War II, the Invaders come crashing into modern times with the same cast of characters, all drastically changed by the passage of time. I can’t wait to see how a modern Invaders comes together. X-fans are also well stocked today, with All-New X-Men #22.NOW kicking off The Trial of Jean Grey, Wolverine and the X-Men getting its final issue, and All-New X-Factor getting a second issue that is hopefully as promising as the first. Finally, fans of the Inhuman-izing of the Marvel U get a heavy dose of Inhumanity tie-ins; Indestructible Hulk, Mighty Avengers and Iron Man all get the treatment today.

bm27DC Releases

Animal Man #27
Batman #27
Batman ’66 #7
Batman And Two-Face #27
Batman Beyond Universe #6
Batwoman #27
Birds Of Prey #27
Green Lantern New Guardians #27
Harley Quinn #2
Justice League #27
Red Hood And The Outlaws #27
Scribblenauts Unmasked A Crisis Of Imagination #1
Supergirl #27
Trinity Of Sin Pandora #7
Unwritten Volume 2 Apocalypse #1
Wonder Woman #27

Perfect Pulls: It’s a relatively light week from DC… unless you’re into Bat-books, in which case you’re broke! Batman #27 continues the phenomena of Zero Year, and judging from the terrifying cover, Dr. Death might get the upper hand on our young up-and-coming vigilante. We also get another nostalgia-filled Batman ’66, a revenge-filled Batman and Two-Face, a future-filled Batman Beyond Universe, and finally a surprise-filled Batwoman. I say surprises for Batwoman because it looks like the new creative team has done a bang-up job of coming onto the book with little warning; if you dropped the book when the previous team left, you should definitely pick it back up. Finally, Kyle continues his training with the Guardians in Green Lantern New Guardians, and the adorable mixing of the DC and Scribblenauts worlds comes together in print comic form for the first time.

zero5Image Releases

Aphrodite IX The Hidden Files #1
Bad Dog #6
Bedlam #11
Carbon Grey Volume 3 #2 (Of 2)
Chew #39
Dead Body Road #2 (Of 6)
Deadly Class #1
Krampus #2
Pretty Deadly #4
Sex #10
Umbral #3
Walking Dead #120
Zero #5

Perfect Pulls: It’s my absolute favorite type of week from Image, the kind that includes another issue of Zero. This super-spy drama is filled to the brim with smart writing and utterly fantastic art, and I always look forward to being able to remind you all of that every week I see it on my list! Again, if you’ve ever enjoyed a spy movie, a scifi movie, or especially both, you need to be reading this book. The new book this week is the latest Remender joint, Deadly Class, and as always, it looks great. A book solely focused on a school for the children of the most dangerous men in the world? I’m in. And of course I’d be remiss if I didn’t point out a new issue of Pretty Deadly this week too. If you haven’t jumped on this twisted Western tale, get on your horse and do so immediately.

Perfect Pulls: It’s another week that’s heavy with indie premiers, though one of this is so ridiculous I have to mention it first. Filed under “two things you never thought would mix” comes IDW’s X-Files Conspiracy Ghostbusters #1, which combines the Lone Gunman with the guys who ain’t afraid of no ghost in what has to be something no one saw coming. IDW also has a new Judge Dredd mini starting today as well, in case you wanted something completely different. Dynamite also has two new books, adding to the “Lil'” craze by giving their Bionic Man and Woman licenses the treatment, as well as Bad Ass, which promises a villain the likes of “if Kick-Ass and Deadpool had a baby.” You know, if that’s your thing. Finally, Dark Horse brings back Elfquest with The Final Quest, while BOOM! presents Hacktivist, a cyberthriller written by none other than Charmed and Who’s the Boss star Alyssa Milano.

Those are the highlights for Wednesday, January 22nd. Anything you simply can’t live without, or simply can’t imagine reading? Share it in the comments!
