Tyler’s Comic Corner 12/19 Edition

Posted on December 19, 2012 at 1:06 pm by Tyler Waterman

Welcome to Tyler’s Comic Corner, where I highlight the majority of this week’s new comic releases. My highlights include mainstream and indie titles, ensuring your pull list won’t be deprived of one of this week’s gems. My apologies if your favorite isn’t listed, but good news; you clearly already knew it was coming!

Perfect Pulls: I’ve never been happier for the rapid-fire Marvel NOW releases than I am this week, and that’s not even for an X-related reason. Last week I took a few stabs at Avengers Arena, a book I had serious reservations about. Fast forward to the following Wednesday, Avengers Arena #2 appears on my list, and gives me an immediate opportunity to apologize. Arena’s premier was one of the strongest in the Marvel NOW lineup. I judged a book by its cover (literally), I shouldn’t have, and you should read this book. Also important: early reviews have revealed that Daredevil #21 is inadvertently the first appearance of Superior Spider-Man; if you’d rather see that next week in Amazing Spider-Man #700, avoid this week’s DD.

DC Releases

Green-Lantern_15Batwoman #15
Before Watchmen Moloch #2 (Of 2)
Birds Of Prey #15
Blue Beetle #15
Catwoman #15
DC Universe Presents #15

He-Man And The Masters Of The Universe #5 (Of 6)
JSA The Liberty Files The Whistling Skull #1 (Of 6)

Nightwing #15
Red Hood And The Outlaws #15
Suicide Squad #14
Supergirl #15
Sword Of Sorcery #3
Unwritten #44
Wonder Woman #15
Young Justice #23

Perfect Pulls: Been following Death of the Family and thought it was weird that it wasn’t showing up in all the Bat-books? Yeah, me too, but that ends this week, as books like Nightwing and Red Hood and the Outlaws finally join the party. Major new advancements in the Lantern event Rise of the Third Army this week as well; Green Lantern #15 is particularly exciting, as new Lantern Simon Baz meets Guy Gardner for the first time! I also mention this every time, but the spectacular He-Man reboot nears its conclusion this week and if you still haven’t started reading it you clearly don’t understand the joy of nostalgia.

Image Releases

Americas-Got-Powers_4_FullAmerica’s Got Powers #4 (Of 6)

Thief Of Thieves #11
Where Is Jake Ellis #2 (Of 5)
Witch Doctor Mal Practice #2 (Of 6)
Witchblade #162

Perfect Pulls: I think it’s fair to say that calling a book one of Image’s best offerings is a pretty big endorsement that the book you’re referring to is a high quality title. That being said, America’s Got Powers is one of the very best offerings from the publisher, and if you love the classic “what heroes would be like in our world” setting at all you need to be reading this book. Not to be outdone, Grant Morrison’s brutal Happy sees its penultimate release, and critically acclaimed books Saga and Thief of Thieves also have new offerings appearing on shelves today.

Perfect Pulls: Dynamite’s epic noir crossover Masks continues this week, bringing together the Green Hornet, The Shadow and The Spider into one book for all your gun-toting, trench coat wearing antihero needs. This issue promises the premier of new masked vigilantes as well, as they bolster their ranks against an entire city gone corrupt, so get on board now! Dark Horse has some cool offerings as well, both with the final issue of The Victories and a couple one-shots that are actually compilations of some of the best stories seen across issues of Dark Horse Presents. And fans of Trek-based comics won’t want to miss IDW’s 100 page Star Trek annual, which promises fanservice aplenty for all fans of Captain Kirk!
