Tyler’s Comic Corner – 12/18/13 Edition

Posted on December 18, 2013 at 6:55 am by Tyler Waterman

Welcome to Tyler’s Comic Corner, where I highlight the majority of this week’s new comic releases. My highlights include mainstream and indie titles, ensuring your pull list won’t be deprived of one of this week’s gems. My apologies if your favorite isn’t listed, but good news; you clearly already knew it was coming!

anxm20Marvel Releases

All-New X-Men #20
Amazing Spider-Man #700.4
Amazing Spider-Man #700.5
Avengers Assemble #22.INH
Cataclysm Ultimate X-Men #2 (Of 3)
Daredevil #34
Deadpool #21
Fantastic Four #15
FF #15
Indestructible Hulk #17.INH
Longshot Saves The Marvel Universe #4 (Of 4)
Scarlet Spider #25
Secret Avengers #13
Superior Spider-Man #24
Superior Spider-Man Team-Up #8
Thor God Of Thunder #16
Thunderbolts Annual 2013 #1
Uncanny Avengers #15
Uncanny X-Force #15
X-Men #8
Young Avengers #14

Perfect Pulls: Marvel takes a break from inundating us all with Infinity or Inhumanity tie-ins this week, which will likely be a huge boon for your wallet. There is one tie-in in Indestructible Hulk #17.INH, but having only one connected title is essentially a vacation compared to the usual offering. That doesn’t mean you want to avoid the Marvel shelf today, however. The Spider-family is well represented today, with yet another Superior Spider-Man (does Dan Slott even sleep?!), a new issue of the fantastic Superior Spider-Man Team-Up, and what is unfortunately the final issue of Scarlet Spider. I really felt that series was a hidden gem; now that it’s over, don’t miss out on any collected trade that’s sure to come. All-New X-Men #20 looks to start the beginnings of a new unexpected relationship (the X-Men are so good at those), Uncanny Avengers #15 features Sentry versus Wasp (so, the death of Wasp then?), and Young Avengers #14 is the penultimate issue of what was a delight for 2013.

ferr3DC Releases

Animal Man #26
Batman ’66 #6
Batman And Two-Face #26
Batman Beyond Universe #5
Birds Of Prey #26
Forever Evil Rogues Rebellion #3 (Of 6)
Green Lantern New Guardians #26
Harley Quinn #1
Justice League Of America’s Vibe #10
Red Hood And The Outlaws #26
Supergirl #26
Teen Titans Go #1
Trinity Of Sin Pandora #6
Wonder Woman #26

Perfect Pulls: Similar to Marvel, there is only one title this week from DC that ties into the current event Forever Evil. Of course, since that event seems to be poorly represented nearly every week and appears to never end, it’s not as much as surprise here. On the plus side, Rogues Rebellion has been one of the better tie-ins to the event, so if we were only getting one, this is a good one to get. Of course, the biggest title here is Harley Quinn #1, delighting fangirls across the globe. Remember, if you enjoyed Harley Quinn #0, today’s issue is back to “normal” comicdom, not the irreverent fourth-wall-breaking romp we saw last time. The excellent Wonder Woman and Batman and… series both continue today as well, and as a surprise to no one, the final issue of the recently cancelled Vibe hits today as well.

zero4coverImage Releases

Black Science #2
Bounce #8
East Of West #8
Mind The Gap #16
Pretty Deadly #3
Revival #16
Saga #17
Sex #9
Ten Grand #6
Umbral #2
Voice In The Dark #2
Witchblade #171
Zero #4

Perfect Pulls: It is an absolute killer line-up today from Image, with new issues from almost all of their hottest new titles. Several of my personal favorites are all represented today, whether it’s the dark hero romp of Bounce, the twisted Wild West delight that is Pretty Deadly, or the outstanding new Remender joint Black Science, who’s recent first issue was so good I gave it the “read twice in one sitting” treatment. More exciting than anything, though, is the new issue of Zero. This book is utterly fantastic, and if you’re sleeping on it, stop it! The art pops off the page, the story and setting is riveting… it’s hard not to recommend everything from Image, but this book simply sells itself, so jump on now if you’ve been missing it.

Perfect Pulls: Dark Horse may be losing the Star Wars license to Marvel now that Disney owns, well, everything, but they aren’t going out without a bang. They’ve got a bunch of great Star Wars books from Dark Horse on the shelf today, with the final issue of A Spark Remains, a new Vader miniseries, and the continuation of two other Star Wars titles. While the Force is strong with Dark Horse today, they’re not content to rest on those laurels, and are also bringing back one of their most classic characters. Ghost features Kelly Sue DeConnick at the helm of one of Dark Horse’s most classic flagships, and it’s great to see the character back in comic shops. Dark Horse isn’t the only one with new stuff this week, however. BOOM! Studios has Midas Flesh, a scifi take on the King Midas myth that’s written by Ryan North (Dinosaur Comics), and IDW premiers The Illegitimates, about five new agents auditioning to replace the James Bond of their agency… who might just be all of their fathers. Lots of great stuff from the indies today!

Those are the highlights for Wednesday, December 18th. Anything you simply can’t live without, or simply can’t imagine reading? Share it in the comments!
