Tyler’s Comic Corner – 12/17/14 Edition

Posted on December 17, 2014 at 7:12 am by Tyler Waterman

Welcome to Tyler’s Comic Corner, where I highlight the majority of this week’s new comic releases. My highlights include mainstream and indie titles, ensuring your pull list won’t be deprived of one of this week’s gems. My apologies if your favorite isn’t listed, but good news; you clearly already knew it was coming!

Scarlet Spiders #2 (Of 3)
Spider-Woman #2
Storm #6

Perfect PullsAxis isn’t over yet, as today marks only the penultimate issue of the current event, but perhaps the best part of Axis says goodbye today. Axis: Hobgoblin is nothing short of fantastic; it turned my favorite Goblin into everyone’s favorite Goblin, and is honestly one of the best event tie-ins I’ve read in a long time. If you don’t know what all the fuss is about, read this book! The Spider-Verse event is also here in force today, with Scarlet Spiders and Spider-Woman webbing it up, as well as a double-dose of Miles Morales with both his own title and his ongoing crossover in All-New X-Men. And finally, we get the second issue of All-New Captain America; the first issue really changed my previously-unimpressed opinion of Falcon-as-Cap, so hopefully this continues that trend.

bar37covDC Releases

Arrow Season 2.5 #3
Batman #37
Batman And Robin #37
Batman Eternal #37
Batman Superman #17
Batwoman #37
Catwoman #37
Earth 2 World’s End #11
Fables #147
Green Lantern New Guardians #37
Infinite Crisis The Fight For The Multiverse #6
Justice League #37
Kitchen #2 (Of 8)
MAD Magazine #531
Multiversity Thunderworld #1
New 52 Futures End #33
Red Hood And The Outlaws #37
Sandman Overture #4 (Of 6)
Smallville Season 11 Continuity #1 (Of 4)
Supergirl #37
Teen Titans #5
Teen Titans Go #7
Trinity Of Sin #3
Wonder Woman #37

Perfect Pulls: Today is a very, very good day for Batman fans. Take your pick; no matter what Bat-direction you go, you’re hitting a winner. There’s the next chapter of Endgame in Batman #37; the next step in the collapse of everything in Batman Eternal #37; the always excellent Batman Superman continues with issue #17. But perhaps none is more exciting than Batman and Robin #37, the penultimate chapter of Robin Rises. Batman versus Darkseid? Check. The Bat-family stuck in Apokolips? Check. Quite possibly the return of Damian Wayne in this very issue? Oh I hope so! Of course, I understand that some crazy folks out there aren’t into Batman, and you haven’t been forgotten, with new issues of great titles like Green Lantern New Guardians, Justice League, Teen Titans and the latest Sandman Overture. But seriously – Damian Wayne!

rum1covImage Release

Activity #16
Alex + Ada #11
Drifter #2
Goners #3
Intersect #2
Li’l Depressed Boy Supposed To Be There Too #3
Manifest Destiny #12
Oddly Normal #4
Rumble #1
Wayward #5
Wicked + The Divine #6
Wytches #3
Zero #13

Perfect Pulls: The newest Image title looks like it might add a new favorite Image character to everyone’s list. Rumble tells the tale of the return of an ancient scarecrow warrior god name Rathraq, and he’s not happy. What spins out of that unhappiness is a modern-day fantasy thriller that the solicits promise will be a “Louis C.K. meets Robert E. Howard in a David Fincher universe” type of tale. That sounds cool, but I’ll be honest; you had me at “ancient scarecrow warrior god!” Also this week, get your fix on some of the very best Image books, with Wytches, Zero, The Wicked and The Divine and Manifest Destiny all getting new issues!

Perfect Pulls: Have you been reading Dynamite’s Flash Gordon series? If not, you’re missing out! The art and colors in the book are some of the best in the business, and the writing has nailed the magic of the character. If you were a fan of Flash growing up, or (like me) just wanted to become more familiar with an iconic hero, this book is perfect for you, and today’s Flash Gordon Holiday Special is a great chance to give the book a try. Valiant also has a particularly strong showing this week, with Harbinger: Faith #0 putting everyone’s favorite flyer into the spotlight she deserves, as well as new issues of the excellent Doctor Mirage and Q2 minis. Add all that up, along with a new Ragnarok from IDW and Mega Man from Archie, and today is an excellent day for the indies!

Those are the highlights for Wednesday, December 16th. Anything you simply can’t live without, or simply can’t imagine reading? Share it in the comments!
