Tyler’s Comic Corner – 12/12 Edition

Posted on December 12, 2012 at 1:43 pm by Tyler Waterman

Welcome to Tyler’s Comic Corner, where I highlight the majority of this week’s new comic releases. My highlights include mainstream and indie titles, ensuring your pull list won’t be deprived of one of this week’s gems. My apologies if your favorite isn’t listed, but good news; you clearly already knew it was coming!

Marvel Releases

Age Of Apocalypse #10
Amazing Spider-Man #699.1
Avengers Arena #1
Avengers Assemble #10
Cable And X-Force #1
Dark Avengers #184
Fantastic Four #2
Iron Man #4
Marvel Universe Vs The Avengers #3 (Of 4)
Scarlet Spider #12
Ultimate Comics Iron Man #3 (Of 4)
Ultimate Comics X-Men #20
Winter Soldier #13
Wolverine #317
X-Treme X-Men #7.1

Perfect Pulls: Another week of new offerings from Marvel NOW, one I’m quick to recommend and one I’m not so sure about. Cable and X-Force #1 fills me with confidence, because Cable leading a dark and eclectic roster of mutants is always compelling. Avengers Arena, however, seems to skirt the line between ambitious and derivative. It makes no bones about flaunting it’s Battle Royale/Hunger Games inspirations, and I’m concerned that in trying to be something popular it may come off as being something generic. Also, I haven’t mentioned this book here yet, but X-Treme X-Men has been a real pleasant surprise; who knew a team of alternate universe X-characters lead by Dazzler could be good!

DC Releases

Batgirl #15
Batman #15
Batman And Robin #15
Batman Arkham Unhinged #9
Before Watchmen Dr. Manhattan #3 (Of 4)
Before Watchmen Rorschach #3 (Of 4)
Deathstroke #15
Demon Knights #15
Frankenstein Agent Of S.H.A.D.E. #15
Green Lantern Corps #15
Grifter #15
Legion Lost #15
Ravagers #7
Saucer Country #10
Suicide Squad #15
Superboy #15
Team 7 #3

Perfect Pulls: The Wednesday every month where all these Bat-titles drop is always my favorite, but it’s particularly exciting right now! Death of the Family rolls on, and every issue brings us further down one of the darkest holes the Bat family has ever been dragged into. In particular, the ending of Batman #15 promises to leave you on the worst cliffhanger yet, and considering all the other endings that’s a terrifying idea! This week also sees two more of the Watchmen prequels near their conclusion, and also sees another release in the fantastic reboot of Team 7, another Image/Wildstorm classic brought back to life by the New 52.

Image Releases

Activity #10
Artifacts #23
Change #1 (Of 4)
Clone #2
Hack Slash #21
Image Firsts Chew #1
Image Firsts Fatale #1
Image Firsts Revival #1
Image Firsts Saga #1
Image Firsts The Manhattan Projects #1
Image Firsts Thief Of Thieves #1
Image Firsts Walking Dead #1
It Girl And The Atomics #5
Point Of Impact #3 (Of 4)
Walking Dead #105

Perfect Pulls: Normally I don’t list reprints in the Comic Corner, but Image is doing something cool this week I thought deserved to be pointed out. Image is nothing if not a house of unique and thrilling titles, the likes of which you don’t really see in the Big Two, and this week truly highlights this with their Image Firsts line. Reprinting the first issues of some of their most unique and successful offerings, this is a great time to try out books you keep hearing about, or to add another issue to your collection.

Perfect Pulls: Some interesting new offerings in the indie world today. Caligula returns to Avatar with a new miniseries that promises to bring more of the mad emperor we all love to hate. Horror fans will want to check out To Hell You Ride, a comic about a small town being destroyed by a curse they’ve brought on themselves. Sam Keith (The Maxx) returns with Hollows, set in a future Japan where soul eating monsters roam the ground and people live amongst the trees to survive. Also, if you haven’t been paying attention to the return of Valiant, they’ve announced their first major crossover is coming soon, so now is a good time to get on board!

Those are the highlights for Wednesday, December 12th. Anything you simply can’t live without, or simply can’t imagine reading? Share it in the comments!
