Tyler’s Comic Corner – 1/2 Edition

Posted on January 2, 2013 at 7:37 pm by Tyler Waterman

Welcome to Tyler’s Comic Corner, where I highlight the majority of this week’s new comic releases. My highlights include mainstream and indie titles, ensuring your pull list won’t be deprived of one of this week’s gems. My apologies if your favorite isn’t listed, but good news; you clearly already knew it was coming!

newav1Marvel Releases

All-New X-Men #5
Daredevil End Of Days #4 (Of 8)
Fury MAX #8
Iron Man #5
Morbius The Living Vampire #1
New Avengers #1
Punisher Nightmare #1 (Of 5)
Red She-Hulk #61
Road To Oz #4 (Of 6)
Ultimate Comics Spider-Man #19
Venom #29

Perfect Pulls: The first release of the year from Marvel is low on quantity, but high on quality. New Avengers begins anew, easily one of the most anticipated of the NOW! relaunches, as this book always seems to be the strongest of the many Avenger-related titles. Of course the new All-New X-Men continues to be fantastic from cover to cover, as does the new Iron Man series, once again highlighting Kieron Gillen’s ability to reinvent characters without changing them at all. Also, Marvel attempts to breath new life into Morbius as a player in the Marvel Universe, and I’m cautiously optimistic they may be able to pull it off; this week will be our first chance to find out.

batinc6DC Releases

All-Star Western #15
American Vampire #34
Arrow #2

Batman Incorporated #6
Batman The Dark Knight #15
Flash #15
Fury Of Firestorm The Nuclear Men #15
I Vampire #15

Justice League Dark #15
Lot 13 #3 (Of 5)
Punk Rock Jesus #6 (Of 6)
Red Lanterns #15
Savage Hawkman #15
Superman #15
Talon #3
Teen Titans #15

Perfect Pulls: The immediate highlight this week is of course Batman Incorporated #6, the same Batman Incorporated that made it onto my Best of 2012 list. American Vampire fans don’t want to miss this issue, as it’s the last issue while Scott Snyder’s other fantastic book goes on a few months of hiatus. Also, if you’ve been waiting until it was completed, the final issue of the critically acclaimed Punk Rock Jesus is out today. Featuring a corporate-owned clone of Jesus Christ (in punk rocker form no less), this book has people talking and asking questions, and for all the right reasons.

inv99Image Releases

Blackacre #2
Darkness #109
Fatale #11
Glory #31
Great Pacific #3
Harvest #5 (Of 5)
I Love Trouble #2
Invincible #99
Manhattan Projects #8
Prophet #32
Youngblood #75

Perfect Pulls: Invincible #99 is the beginning of the end for Robert Kirkman’s other masterpiece, because when it comes to Kirkman’s books, anniversary issues mean something just awful is going to happen. (Here’s looking at you, Walking Dead #100. Ow, all of m-m-m-my feels.) I mean, the event leading up to it is called The Death of Everyone for crying out loud! Also, speaking of anniversary issues, Youngblood hits the #75 mark… and it only took twenty years to get there!

vampst1Indie Releases

Mars Attacks Popeye (One Shot) (IDW)
Star Trek #16 (IDW)
Transformers Prime Rage Of The Dinobots #2 (Of 4) (IDW)

Perfect Pulls: Dynamite premiers a new Vampirella series this week, in which agents of Heaven Itself approach Vamp for help, and an angel/vampire teamup is an intriguing enough idea to get me to tune in. Also, the short-but-great Star Wars miniseries Purge the Tyrant’s Fist ends this week, and Stan Sakai’s distinctive style graces the legend of the 47 Ronin again as well.

Those are the highlights for Wednesday, January 2nd. Anything you simply can’t live without, or simply can’t imagine reading? Share it in the comments!
