Tyler’s Comic Corner – 1/16 Edition

Posted on January 16, 2013 at 12:50 pm by Tyler Waterman

Welcome to Tyler’s Comic Corner, where I highlight the majority of this week’s new comic releases. My highlights include mainstream and indie titles, ensuring your pull list won’t be deprived of one of this week’s gems. My apologies if your favorite isn’t listed, but good news; you clearly already knew it was coming!

Marvel Releases

savwolvieAll-New X-Men #6
Alpha Big Time #0.1
Avengers Assemble #11
Avenging Spider-Man #16
Captain America #3
Captain Marvel #9
Daredevil #22
Dark Avengers #185
Indestructible Hulk #3
New Avengers #2
Punisher Nightmare #3 (Of 5)
Savage Wolverine #1
Ultimate Comics Iron Man #4 (Of 4)
Venom #30
Wolverine MAX #3
X-Factor #250
X-Men #40

Perfect Pulls: Hard to believe there are still Marvel NOW! premiers to be had, but this week we have another, and one that I’ve really been looking forward to. Savage Wolverine #1 is the start of yet another Wolverine solo book, and solo Logan titles tend to go in one of two directions: painfully convoluted, or exceptionally compelling. Fingers crossed this represents the latter trend. We also see releases in some of the most interesting of the NOW! titles, like All-New X-Men, New Avengers and Indestructible Hulk, as well as the return of temporary Spider-sidekick Alpha. Alpha as a character was nearly unreadably bad in Amazing Spider-Man… here’s hoping this time around the character is more developed than “snarky jerk with way too much power,” otherwise I’ll be celebrating his return by looking forward to him leaving again.

DC Releases

grifter16Batgirl #16
Batman #16
Batman And Robin #16
Batman Arkham Unhinged #10
Deathstroke #16
Demon Knights #16
Frankenstein Agent Of S.H.A.D.E. #16
Grifter #16
Insurgent #1 (Of 6)
Legion Lost #16
Ravagers #8
Suicide Squad #16
Superboy #16
Team 7 #4
Threshold #1

Perfect Pulls: A few more of the original New 52 titles get the axe today, including one that I’m just devastated about. Legion Lost and Frankenstein see their final issues, neither of which are that surprising… but joining them is also Grifter, a loss I feel like a kick in the gut. Grifter has always been one of my absolutely favorite characters, and while I knew the following on this book was minuscule (read: just me) and that this was inevitable, I’m still extremely disappointed about it. On the plus side, it’s also the Bat-iest week of the month, with all three mainstream Bat-titles rolling into the final moments of Death of the Family. DotF concludes in the Batman #17 next month, so the worst of the worst is bound to happen this week!

Image Releases

toddComeback #3 (Of 5)
Creator Owned Heroes #8
Elephantmen #45
Hoax Hunters #6
Li’l Depressed Boy #15
Saga #9
Todd The Ugliest Kid On Earth #1 (Of 4)

Perfect Pulls: A very light week this week from Image, even by their standards, but with a few noteworthy items nonetheless. Newcomer Todd The Ugliest Kid On Earth promises to be a mix of comedy and violence, following the disturbing antics of a dysfunctional family and the equally dysfunctional manics they encounter. Also be on the lookout for another issue of the time-traveling miniseries Comeback, and Hoax Hunters begins a new arc this week for folks who are looking for a good time to jump into the book.

Mars Attacks The Real Ghostbusters (IDW)

Archer And Armstrong #6 (Valiant)
Bloodshot #7 (Valiant)

Perfect Pulls: This week is a really strong week for fans of indie books. I’d be remiss if I didn’t first point out that Extermination ends this week, and at only eight total issues, this is a book everyone should investigate. If you were a fan of Mark Waid’s Irredeemable, this book is for you. Also, be sure to look into Dark Horse’s Black Beetle from Eisner award winner Francesco Francavilla, which has been making waves amongst critics across the board. Along with those, the immortal John Byrne’s newest adventure also begins this week, with High Ways #1 taking us for what sounds to be an awesome scifi romp through space.
