Tyler’s Comic Corner – 10/31 Edition

Posted on October 31, 2012 at 11:30 am by Tyler Waterman

Welcome to Tyler’s Comic Corner, where I highlight the majority of this week’s new comic releases. My highlights include mainstream and indie titles, ensuring your pull list won’t be deprived of one of this week’s gems. My apologies if your favorite isn’t listed, but good news; you clearly already knew it was coming!

Marvel Releases

A+X #1
Avenging Spider-Man Annual #1
AvX Consequences #4 (Of 5)
Captain Marvel #6
Hit-Girl #4 (Of 5)
Mighty Thor #22
New Mutants #50
Ultimate Comics Spider-Man #16.1
Ultimate Comics X-Men #18
Winter Soldier #12
Wolverine And The X-Men #19
X-Men Legacy #275

Perfect Pulls: Up is down, left is right, cats love dogs and A’s and X’s are now a plus and not a versus! In this brave new world of the Avengers trying to make up for the fact that they’ve ignored mutant racism for decades, we get a new monthly book highlighting a team up between two characters from each team. I personally love team-up books (Avenging Spider-Man has been great) so this is definitely worth checking out! The rest of this slow week for Marvel is also another week of endings as we head into Marvel NOW!; Mighty Thor, New Mutants, and X-Men Legacy all see their final issues this week. I’d be remiss if I didn’t give a shout-out to Legacy. The often-renamed series that started with the famous Jim Lee X-Men #1 and also included the epic New X-Men run by Grant Morrison that truly defined the modern X-books will not be forgotten. (Mostly because it restarts in Marvel NOW!… but still!)

DC Releases

Action Comics Annual #1
American Vampire #32
Aquaman #13
Batgirl Annual #1
Batman Beyond Unlimited #9
Ghosts #1 (One Shot)(Dave Johnson Regular Cover)
Joe Kubert Presents #1 (Of 6)
Justice League Dark Annual #1
Lot 13 #1 (Of 5)
Masters Of The Universe The Origin Of Skeletor #1 (One Shot)
New Deadwardians #8 (Of 8)
Phantom Lady #3 (Of 4)
Swamp Thing Annual #1

Perfect Pulls: DC counters Marvel’s slow week with a slow week all its own, but just like Marvel, there are a few gems among the limited offerings. The Action Comics Annual introduces a new villain to the Superman side of DC, with the ominous yet uncreative name of Kryptonite Man. Ghosts looks to be a killer one-shot for horror fans, combining several stories written by some of the biggest names at DC, including Geoff “I Made Aquaman Cool” Johns. (Not sarcasm by the way; he really did.) And of course, I can’t let another Masters of the Universe release go by without reminding all of you that this reboot is the greatest reboot in the history of reboots, and you should all be reading it all of the time.

Image Releases

Bedlam #1
Bloodstrike #32
CBLDF Liberty Annual #5 (2012)
Creator Owned Heroes #6
Fatale #9
Happy #2 (Of 4)
Haunt #27
Whispers #4
Witchblade #161

Perfect Pulls: Hey look, Image has a pretty quiet day too. Is there some sort of restriction on the number of books you can release on demon-related holidays? I blame the Comics Code Authority. Anyways, this week from Image is highlighted by Happy #2, Grant Morrison’s brutal crime drama that reminds you why Morrison is so great I have to mention him twice in one Comic Corner. Equally fantastic comic scribe Ed Brubaker’s Fatale also sees a new issue, and Bedlam has an interesting ex-villain premise that makes this book worth checking out.

Indie Releases

Dan The Unharmable #7 (Avatar)
Fashion Beast #3 (Avatar)
Ferals #10 (Avatar)
Night Of The Living Dead Aftermath #1 (Avatar)
Higher Earth #6 (BOOM!)
Steed And Mrs Peel #2 (BOOM!)
Angel And Faith #15 (Dark Horse)
B.P.R.D. Hell On Earth #100 (Dark Horse)
Star Wars Darth Maul Death Sentence #4 (Of 4) (Dark Horse)
Army Of Darkness #6 (Dynamite)
Dark Shadows #9 (Dynamite)
Green Hornet #30 (Dynamite)
Green Hornet Strikes #10 (Of 10) (Dynamite)
Red Sonja Atlantis Rises #3 (Dynamite)
Vampirella #24 (Dynamite)
Vampirella Vs Fluffy (One Shot) (Dynamite)
30 Days Of Night #11 (IDW)
Doctor Who #2 (IDW)
Ghostbusters #14 (IDW)
Godzilla #6 (IDW)
Mars Attacks The Holidays (One Shot) (IDW)
Rocketeer Cargo Of Doom #3 (Of 4) (IDW)
Star Trek #14 (IDW)
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #15 (IDW)
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Annual 2012 (IDW)
Transformers More Than Meets The Eye #10 (IDW)
True Blood #6 (IDW)

Perfect Pulls: Turtle fans like myself get a double helping of TMNT action this week, and one part in particular is very exciting: TMNT Annual 2012 is written and drawn by Kevin Eastman himself! Even better, in a call back to the old school gritty Turtle comics, this focuses on Casey Jones and Raphael hanging out and beating people up. In other words, MUST BUY. Also, let the numbering begin! Dark Horse finally eschews the miniseries-style collecting of BPRD that I’m sure seemed like a good idea at the time for an actually numbering system, starting with this massive 100th issue.

Those are the highlights for Wednesday, October 31st. Anything you simply can’t live without, or simply can’t imagine reading? Share it in the comments!

HOLY CRAP just realized I left a HUGE release off this list, Superman Earth One Volume 2 comes out this week! JMS makes his own Superman and he is awesome, Volume 1 was amazing, and it's a really nice hardcover at a paperback price. Buy it!
