Tyler’s Comic Corner – 10/17 Edition

Posted on October 17, 2012 at 3:31 am by Tyler Waterman

Welcome to Tyler’s Comic Corner, where I highlight the majority of this week’s new comic releases. My highlights include mainstream and indie titles, ensuring your pull list won’t be deprived of one of this week’s gems. My apologies if your favorite isn’t listed, but good news; you clearly already knew it was coming!

Marvel Releases

A-Babies Vs X-Babies #1
Avengers Assemble #8
AvX Consequences #2 (Of 5)
Captain Marvel #5
Daredevil #19
Dark Avengers #182
Dark Tower The Gunslinger The Man In Black #5 (Of 5)
Hawkeye #3
Marvel Now Point One #1
Marvel Zombies Halloween #1
Mighty Thor #21
New Avengers #31
Ultimate Comics Iron Man #1 (Of 4)
Ultimate Comics Spider-Man #16
Uncanny X-Men #20
Untold Tales Of The Punisher MAX #5 (Of 5)
Venom #26
X-Factor #245

Perfect Pulls: This week Marvel is light on quantity but high on quality. The weekly AvX Consequences continues, following the incarceration of Scott Summers. Marvel Now Point One is our guide to this brave new Marvel world, and I will gladly take one. (NOW! is complicated!) It’s still early, but  Hawkeye  continues to impress, as does (never thought I’d say this) the current Gambit spinoff. Uncanny X-Men #20 is the final issue before the reboot-that-isn’t, the inevitable hardcover collection of which I’ll be buying day one, twenty must-read issues for any X-fan. Oh, and of course A-Babies vs X-Babies, for those of you who love Anne Geddes but wish she had more optic blasts and Mjolnirs.

DC Releases

American Vampire Lord Of Nightmares #5 (Of 5)
Batwoman #13
Before Watchmen Minutemen #4
Birds Of Prey #13
Blue Beetle #13
Catwoman #13
DC Universe Presents #13
Green Lantern New Guardians #13
Hellblazer #296
He-Man And The Masters Of The Universe #3 (Of 6)
Justice League #13
Legion Of Super-Heroes #13
Nightwing #13
Red Hood And The Outlaws #13
Saucer Country #8
Supergirl #13, $2.99
Sword Of Sorcery #1
Wonder Woman #13
Young Justice #21

Perfect Pulls: The masterful He-Man reboot continues this week, a print-and-supplemental-digital series that I’ll have a waaay too long article about the day after it ends. The Joker epic Death of the Family continues across the Bat-related #13s today, Scott Snyder’s as-good-as-Batman American Vampire miniseries wraps, and the Rise of the Third Army continues in New Guardians. Considering the emphasis placed on Kyle this time around, his book is sure to be significant throughout the saga.

Image Releases

Activity #9
Chew #29
Cyber Force #1
Darkness #107
Glory #29
It Girl And The Atomics #3
No Place Like Home #5
Savage Dragon #182, $3.50
Shinku #5
Walking Dead #103

Perfect Pulls: I don’t know what’s cooler; that 90’s flagship Cyber Force is back, or that the first five issues are free! Thanks to the magic of Kickstarter, the first five issues release at your local shop and in your local internet tubes for the price of no price. No excuse not to check that out, I guess if you really hate it you can try and get your free back. Maybe in free credit. Also, Walking Dead #103 is (another) new beginning for the series, and it’s a beginning that can only get much worse before it gets any better. It’s being marketed as a good jump-on point for new fans (with Season 3 of the show having premiered this week), but don’t listen to them. If you want to jump on, start at the beginning; you’ll be glad you did, and you’ll be caught up in no time; you can’t put it down.

Indie Releases

Womanthology Space #2 (IDW)
Zaucer Of Zilk #1 (Of 2) (IDW)
Harbinger #5 (Valiant)
X-O Manowar #6 (Valiant)

Perfect Pulls: Pretty low impact week for the indies, except for Dark Horse and Valiant. Dark Horse premiers a barrage of new miniseries this week, ranging from Boba Fett-related hijinx to supernatural law enforcement, and even something described as “Buffy and Angel meet Natural Born Killers.” (That last one is Ex Sanguine.) Valiant’s flagship X-O Manowar continues, as well as one of its most complex new series, Harbinger. Also, the promising Peter Cannon Thunderbolt continues, as well as the dark-as-night Victories.

Those are the highlights for Wednesday, October 17th. Anything you simply can’t live without, or simply can’t imagine reading? Share it in the comments!
