Tyler’s Comic Corner – 10/16/13 Edition

Posted on October 16, 2013 at 7:02 am by Tyler Waterman

Welcome to Tyler’s Comic Corner, where I highlight the majority of this week’s new comic releases. My highlights include mainstream and indie titles, ensuring your pull list won’t be deprived of one of this week’s gems. My apologies if your favorite isn’t listed, but good news; you clearly already knew it was coming!

A+X13coverMarvel Releases

A+X #13
Avengers #21
Avengers Assemble #20
Cable And X-Force #15
Fantastic Four #13
Guardians Of The Galaxy #7
Hawkeye #13
Hunger #4 (Of 4)
New Avengers #11
Superior Spider-Man #19
Uncanny X-Men #13
Wolverine MAX #12
X-Men Legacy #18

Perfect Pulls: While the most important thing to come out of AvX is of course the return of mutants, one of the best results from that event is A+X. While I’ll be the first to admit I have a soft spot for team-up books, this book is just flat-out great, throwing together odd pairings of Avengers and X-Men (last issue was Cap and Jubilee!) in one-shot stories that tend to bring out the best of everyone involved. However, this issue is the first to start a multi-part story, and it’s doing it with the oddest couple possible: Captain America and Cyclops! I don’t know about you, but I have to know what conflict is so important that it requires the two people who get along the worst in the Marvel U to team-up. Also this week, the lackluster Hunger ends, bringing us right into Cataclysm and the end of the Ultimate universe, we finally get a new Hawkeye that I can’t help but hope will be more Clint than Kate, and Infinity rolls on in Avengers and New Avengers. If you’ve been following Infinity but try to avoid tie-ins, don’t avoid these; these books are just as important to the main story as the actual title is, and both are consistently outstanding.

Wonder Woman #24

Perfect Pulls: The DC events keep building this week, from the surface of Earth to the farthest reaches of the DC Universe! Lights Out continues this week in Green Lantern New Guardians, and if you’ve been reading along, you’re probably asking the same thing I am: what else can go wrong for the myriad Corps? And since this is Kyle’s book, I suspect this week we’ll learn what happens to a White Lantern’s powers of life when the lights of every Corps are very much dying! And of course, Forever Evil has a major presence this week, with Rogues Rebellion beginning (and hopefully being as compelling as Arkham War), as well as a direct tie-in over in Justice League of America #8.

ZERO#2COVERImage Releases

Bushido #3 (Of 5)
Invincible #106
Morning Glories #33
Nowhere Men #6
Sheltered #4
Thief Of Thieves #17
Whispers #6 (Of 6)
Zero #2

Perfect Pulls: This week is light from the indie juggernaut, but never does a week go by without at least a few books from Image that you must have, even if none of them are a premier issue of the next big thing. Top of the list definitely goes to Zero #2. While it’s too soon for me to declare Zero my favorite book coming out of Image right now, I can confidently say the first issue left me thinking it might get there, and I’m excited to see if this secret-agent-with-a-twist tale still stays as compelling as it’s premier. Also, Bushido rolls on at breakneck speed, with weekly releases keeping this miniseries feeling fast paced and suitably epic!

Perfect Pulls: There’s a new title coming out this week with a premise so confusing I simply have to read it to find out how it will work at all. This paradox of a comic is S.H.O.O.T. First, the latest from Dark Horse. The gist behind this book is pretty simple: the Secular Humanist Occult Obliteration Taskforce is a team of atheists out to defend humanity from angels, demons, and everything else they don’t believe in. Now you see my confusion… if you’re engaged in mortal combat with something, whether it’s from above, below, or somewhere in between, isn’t that a compelling reason to believe in the thing that’s trying to kill you?! I know there must be more going on here, so I’ll be grabbing this for sure to find out what I’m missing. Also, don’t miss BOOM! Studios’ I.M.A.G.I.N.E. Agents while you’re at it. This is about the agency tasked with controlling the antics of imaginary friends… and you know that sounds great!

Those are the highlights for Wednesday, October 16th. Anything you simply can’t live without, or simply can’t imagine reading? Share it in the comments!
