Tyler’s Comic Corner – 10/1/14 Edition

Posted on October 1, 2014 at 8:07 am by Tyler Waterman

Welcome to Tyler’s Comic Corner, where I highlight the majority of this week’s new comic releases. My highlights include mainstream and indie titles, ensuring your pull list won’t be deprived of one of this week’s gems. My apologies if your favorite isn’t listed, but good news; you clearly already knew it was coming!

Perfect Pulls: It’s the start of a new era today in the Marvel Universe, as some of the bold changes Marvel has set in motion kick off with today’s new books. Over in Captain America #25 we see the start of The Falcon’s time as the man with the shield, while Thor #1 introduces us to the new female Thunder God the internet can’t stop talking about. Also, stemming out of the results of Original SinBucky Barnes the Winter Soldier begins Bucky’s time as the Man on the Wall, and begins to introduce us to the threats Nick Fury’s been facing for years without anyone knowing. All these new beginnings, combined with the latest chapter of Spider-Verse and next step towards the Death of Wolverine, means Marvel has a killer lineup today.

Perfect Pulls: Marvel isn’t the only place kicking off some new starts today; DC is right there with them. The most anticipated title is definitely Gotham Academy, set in a prestigious prep school that, like all things in Gotham, isn’t quite what it seems. Promising both a fun “Buffy meets Batman” vibe, as well as dark connections to Gotham’s past, this looks to be quite different from the usual Bat-offerings. Also this week is Green Lantern New Gods Godhead #1, a one-shot that kicks off a major New Gods/Corps tie-in that will leave the DCU fundamentally changed. The New Gods have been getting a major push from the DC brass lately, so expect this one to be really important. Even if you’re not a fan of Lanterns or Gods, you may want to check this one out.

Walking Dead #132
Witchblade #178

Perfect Pulls: Everyone has that one kid that they remember picking on that, if they could go back, they’d leave alone. Kids are cruel, and hindsight is 20/20. But suppose that kid became a brutal serial killer, and came back for YOU instead? That’s the question Image asks in Cutter #1, a four-part series coming out each week this October. And while I don’t yet know the answer to the question, I can’t suspect that a bitter killer called “The Cutter” is coming back to alleviate your guilt! Of course, if serial killers aren’t your thing, there’s plenty of Walking Dead, God Hates Astronauts, Morning Glories and Tech Jacket goodness to hold you over.

Perfect Pulls: It seems like every week there’s always one indie publisher who came out swinging with a bunch of new books, and this week it’s Dynamite, with three new titles on shelves. The first is a no brainer, as Holmes vs. Houdini pits two of history’s greatest intellects against each other. (Ok, maybe “no brainer” wasn’t the right term to use there.) Dynamite is also bringing the shape-changing coyote Mercy Thompson to comics, from the author of the popular novels herself, Patricia Briggs. And finally, The Damnation of Charlie Wormwood finds a man willing to do anything to save his sick son, even if it means using his connections as a prison teacher in all the wrong ways.

Those are the highlights for Wednesday, October 1st. Anything you simply can’t live without, or simply can’t imagine reading? Share it in the comments!
