A new trailer for director Justin Chadwick’s biopic Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom has been released, accompanied by a new song from U2.  The film stars Idris Elba and chronicles the life of Nelson Mandela from his childhood in a rural village to his election as president of South Africa. I have a hard time picturing anyone other than Morgan Freeman as Mandella, but Elba has really impressed me recently, and he looks and sounds amazing here. It’s also nice to see the struggle and turmoil that embroiled the would-be-leader’s early years. It showcases that a great man’s struggle came from sacrifice and struggle, where as most films glaze over the horrors of Apartheid.  This movie is receiving mixed-to-positive reviews, with many noting that it simply tries to cover too much ground, but I’m looking forward to seeing Elba transform throughout the years of the film..  As for the U2 song “Ordinary Love,” it’s very current-era U2, which is to say awesome.

The film also stars Naomie Harris.  Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom opens in limited release on November 29th.
