After 2011’s charming The Muppets, Disney seems to be at a loss for what to do with the characters. Muppets Most Wanted flopped and a friend who’s a die-hard Muppets fan said it was awful (apparently, one of the Muppets has a gun at one point). Another feature film was unlikely, but the Muppets are still a valuable IP, so the company is now bringing them back to television with The Muppets (a title that is no way confusing, lazy, and damaging to Google results).

ABC (which is owned by Disney) picked up the show, and now the first The Muppets TV series trailer has been released. The comedy, which is billed as “a more adult Muppet show”, is pretty scattershot, but most disheartening is how they’re taking on the talking head model of comedy that was popularized by mockumentaries, The Office, and ABC’s biggest hit, Modern Family. The trailer pokes fun at this device, but it still looks like they’re going to use it anyway. The thinking seems to be that the Muppets are versatile enough to fit into any format, and while I’ll agree that they can go unexpected places (The Muppet Christmas Carol is quite charming), The Muppets feels like it’s taking us to where we’ve already been before with a number of sitcoms. I hope that the show can still find the soul of the characters even if they’re being forced into a familiar mold.

Check out The Muppets TV series trailer below. The half-hour show will run on Tuesdays at 8:00pm.

Here’s the brief synopsis:

The Muppets return to primetime with a contemporary, documentary-style show. For the first time ever, a series will explore the Muppets’ personal lives and relationships, both at home and at work, as well as romances, breakups, achievements, disappointments, wants and desires. This is a more adult Muppet show, for “kids” of all ages.
