There is definitely no series of the winter TV season (no pun intended) that has as much hype or pedigree as HBO’s raucous music drama Vinyl. The series comes from Terence Winter (Boardwalk Empire), Martin Scorsese, and Mick Jagger, and like Boardwalk Empire, the premiere will be directed by Scorsese.

Vinyl takes place in the 1970s, and is set in New York (of course — the favored milieu of both Winter and Scorsese’s works). Punk, Disco, Rock, and Hip Hop will all be explored, alongside the booze, violence, drugs, and pills that fueled them (plus plenty of feathered hair and flares, of course). Bobby Canavale stars as Richie Finestra, a record label president on the brink, with Olivia Wilde as his ex-wife Devon, and Ray Romano as the Head of Promotions for the label. The series also features Juno Temple, Andrew “Dice” Clay, Ato Essandoh, Max Casella, James Jagger, Jack Quaid, Brirgitte Hjort Sorenson, and P.J. Byrne.

Though not much else is known about the series yet, we do know what a gorgeous job Winter did as showrunner of Boardwalk Empire. Narratively, there were definitely some pitfalls as the seasons went on (one which was an actor’s choice to leave, but it really set the series on a weird trajectory from there on out), but the show could never be faulted for its style. It’ll be interesting to see his version of the 70s, and how the story will hold itself together while being pulled in so many different musical directions. I am expecting (like Boardwalk Empire) a kickass soundtrack at the very least.

Vinyl launches on HBO in January. Check out the new trailer below:

Here’s the official logline for Vinyl:

Set in 1970s New York, the series will explore the drug- and sex-fueled music business as punk and disco were breaking out, all through the eyes of a record executive trying to resurrect his label and find the next new sound.
